Affordable Health Insurance Shopping With A Brokers Touch ...

If you need insurance by a particular date, apply well in advance to allow for delays, for misplaced paperwork, changes in your application, etc. Our insurance coverage was approved effective a specific date, but we were able to move it to another date to coincide with the dropping of our NJ health care provider.

Every year your car insurance broker can search for the best motor insurance for you saving you a lot of wasted time and effort, because while the car insurance you took out last year was the best deal it might not be the best deal this year. You should never just simply renew your car insurance without talking to a car insurance broker first. If you do then you could end up paying more money for your car insurance than you have to.

You have no at fault accidents. You have no speeding tickets. Your car insurance rate just increased over 20 percent from last year and when you call other companies to get quotes they don?t return your call or quote you outrageous prices. There are three reasons why this may be happening to you, and I?m going to let you in on what they could be, by exposing Ontario?s Auto Insurance Dirty Little Secrets.

The role of a car insurance broker is to act as an intermediary between the customer and the underwriting Insurance Company. Within this role there are various functions that they carry out in interaction both with the car insurance buying public and the Insurer with who they place the business.

Remove duplicate coverage including your medical, if you already have this coverage under your health insurance policy. You can also drop your towing coverage, if you are covered by your AAA club.

Begin by finding some fine insurance brokers. You will be provided with quotes from several insurance companies by your agent. However, make sure to approach several insurance agents, because most agents work for a single company. However, this method is time consuming and people may have to pay fees to the agents.

Almost everything that the people of today do have something directly or indirectly connected to do with the use of the internet. Of course, who wouldn

Dr. James West dies at 98; a founder of Betty Ford Center

Dr. James W. West stood on the cutting edge of medicine in the middle of the 20th century and recognized "it sounded bizarre to remove an organ from a dead person and expect it to work."

He was part of a team of surgeons who helped change that perception when they performed an early transplant, using a kidney from a cadaver, in 1950 at a Chicago-area hospital. The successful operation galvanized public interest and is credited with influencing surgeons around the world to attempt organ transplants.

Open about being a recovering alcoholic physician, West pioneered substance-abuse programs in Illinois and in 1982 was named founding medical director of the Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage, now the most prominent center for treatment of chemical dependencies. He had been sober since the late 1950s.

"He was every bit as important as Mrs. Ford," John Schwarzlose, the center's chief executive, told The Times. "There wouldn't have been a Betty Ford Center without her courage, but Jim was that veteran physician who knew just what to do. He was a true leader, and we were lucky to have him."

West, 98, died July 24 at his Palm Desert home of complications related to old age, his son Bill said.

West served as the center's medical director until 1989, when he became physician director of the outpatient program, a position he held until he retired in 2007 at 93.

"In Dr. West, I've found a healer, a teacher, and a friend," the former first lady wrote in the preface to "The Betty Ford Center Book of Answers," a 1997 West project.

Since the center opened Oct. 4, 1982, West had insisted that it was important for physicians to serve as active members of the treatment team.

"This little bit of insight has prompted Dr. West to develop models of assessment and detoxification that have been duplicated around the world," wrote Ford, who had also been open about her personal battles with prescription drug addiction and alcohol. She died in July 2011.

Dennis Gilhousen, president of the National Assn. of Addiction Treatment Providers, called West "a pioneer in the world of addiction treatment in the truest sense of that word. He championed new ideas and a new attitude about providing quality treatment that endures to this day."

The organization gives out the James W. West Quality Improvement Award in his honor.

When West received a reported $100,000 advance for the "Book of Answers," he donated it and his profits from book sales to a Betty Ford Center fund that benefits patients who need help paying for treatment.

The book grew out of a question-and-answer column called "Sober Days" that he had long written for the Desert Sun newspaper in Palm Springs. His final column was published July 26.

James Ward West was born March 29, 1914, in Chicago, the eldest of four children. His father worked in ticket booths at theater and sports venues.

As a high school sophomore at a Jesuit boarding school in Wisconsin, West decided to become a doctor after hearing an inspirational speech at a retreat.

After earning a medical degree from Loyola University Chicago, he practiced surgery from 1942 to 1981 and taught his specialty at his alma mater.

While in medical school, he had been introduced to amphetamines by a fellow student and was addicted to alcohol, West told the Tulsa World in 1997.

"My abuse was not flagrant. It was more periodic," he said in the article. "But I recognized it as a problem."

He sought help, which led him to study psychiatry and substance abuse disorders and to teach psychiatry at the University of Chicago and at what is now Rush Medical College. He helped found the Chicago rehabilitation program Haymarket Center and an Illinois medical society program to help physicians struggling with substance abuse and other problems.

On June 17, 1950, West was a surgeon at Little Company of Mary Hospital in a Chicago suburb when he removed a kidney from a woman who had just died and Dr. Richard Lawler transplanted it into Ruth Tucker, a 49-year-old woman with a genetic kidney disease.

"It was very controversial," West told the Catholic New World newspaper in 2004. "We had many doctors who supported it, but many were against it. The clergy in particular opposed this procedure.... It was like, once it was dead, it should stay dead."

Although the transplanted kidney failed after several months, it served as a temporary bridge, enabling Tucker's other remaining kidney to begin functioning properly again. She lived five more years.

Within days of the operation, the national press was reporting that the transplant was "the first of its kind," but it was one of a small number of such pioneering procedures. A 1954 Boston case involving twin brothers is widely recognized as the first successful kidney transplant. The procedure is now relatively commonplace, with more than 66,000 performed in 2005, according to the World Health Organization.

Fellow surgeon Lawler served as godfather to Bill, one of six children West had with his wife, Shirley. They had been married 58 years when she died at 81 in 1997.

Late in life, West continued to study the four-string banjo, which he played at Little Company of Mary as a member of an all-physician Dixieland jazz band called the Emergency Room All Stars.

When asked how he was doing, West could be counted on to reply, "Never better" or "tip-top."

He is survived by his second wife, Maureen, whom he married in 1998; his six children; two stepdaughters; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister.

A memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Aug. 25 at Sacred Heart Church, 43775 Deep Canyon Road, Palm Desert.

There are more cars and drivers hitting the road every year. With so many vehicles on the road, accidents will happen. The difference between a small bother and major pain can be car insurance. How can you decide what insurance you require and how to buy it? Auto insurance protects you by covering the cost of damage caused to your vehicle or another person?s vehicle and injury to others, yourself, or your passengers, and certain other occurrences, such as theft. Every state and province mandates car insurance by law. Choosing to drive without insurance could cause you to repair or replace a stolen or damaged vehicle or pay the cost of any damage for which you might be responsible. Pays for damages due to bodily injury and property damage to others for which you are responsible. Bodily injury damages include medical expenses, lost wages and pain and suffering. Property damage includes damaged property and loss of use of property. It also covers your defense and court costs if you are sued. Higher recommended insurances are available that cover more than the lower, state-mandated insurance. Personal injury protection: This is required in some states and is optional in others. It pays you or your passengers for medical treatment resulting from a crash, regardless of who may have been at fault, and is often called no-fault coverage. It may also cover lost earnings, replacement of services and funeral expenses. The minimum amount of this insurance is usually set by the state. Medical payments: This coverage is available in non-no-fault states; it pays despite who may have been at fault. It pays for an insured person?s reasonable and necessary medical and funeral expenses for bodily injury from a crash. Collision: This pays for damage to your car caused by a collision. Comprehensive: Applies if your car is stolen or damaged by causes other than collision, including fire, wind, hail, flood or vandalism. Uninsured motorist: This pays for damages when an insured person is injured in a crash caused by another person who does not have liability insurance or by a person who cannot be identified (usually a hit-and-run driver). Under-insured motorist: This pays for damages when an insured person is injured in a crash caused by another person who does not have enough liability insurance to cover the full amount of the damages. Other coverage, such as emergency road service and car rental, is also available. More On Vehicle Insurance

Memory improves for older adults using computerized brain fitness program

ScienceDaily (Aug. 3, 2012) ? UCLA researchers found that older adults who regularly used a brain fitness program played on a computer demonstrated significantly improved memory and language skills.

The team studied 59 participants with an average age of 84, recruited from local retirement communities in Southern California. The volunteers were split into two groups: the first group used a brain fitness program for an average of 73.5 (20 minute) sessions across a six-month period while a second group played it less than 45 times during the same period. Researchers found that the first group demonstrated significantly higher improvement in memory and language skills, compared to the second group.

The study's findings add to the field exploring whether such brain fitness tools may help improve language and memory and may ultimately help protect individuals from the cognitive decline associated with aging and Alzheimer's disease.

Age-related memory decline affects approximately 40 percent of older adults and is characterized by self-perception of memory loss and decline in memory performance. Previous studies have shown that engaging in mental activities can help improve memory, but little research has been done to determine whether the numerous brain fitness games and memory training programs on the market are effective in improving memory. This is one of the first studies to assess the cognitive effects of a computerized memory training program.

The research was conducted by Dr. Karen Miller, associate clinical professor, Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA and Dr. Gary Small, professor of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at the Semel Institute.

The research was presented Aug. 3 at the annual convention of the American Psychological Association

MIA: New. Improved? ? Miami International Business Attorneys

Posted on by The Victoria Law Group

Miami International Airport gets a bad rap sometimes for things beyond its control.? However, it is one of the few airports in the country that is constantly trying to improve the user experience.? For example, last Saturday, they started the Orange Line train direct to MIA.? That, to me, is cool.? Earlier this week, the first full day of Miami International Airport?s new international arrival terminal brought improvement but not perfection.? Hey, if we don?t get it right the first time, we keep trying.

KeePass

Most password managers integrate with your browser and aim to fully automate the process of capturing and replaying credentials for secure websites. KeePass (free), an open source tool, takes a rather different approach. While it doesn't automate capture of secure credentials, it can log in to websites using any browser and can also handle application passwords. It's also absolutely loaded with configuration options; a tinkerer's dream!

KeePass's wealth of options is noticeable right from the start. When you first create your database, you can choose to define a strong master password for encryption, use a file as the encryption key, or both. If the key file resides on a USB drive, you've just enabled two-factor authentication. In addition, if you never plan to use KeePass on a different PC you can lock the database to the currently active Windows account.

For extra security you can turn on the product's secure desktop option. With this setting active, when KeePass presents its master key entry dialog it suppresses other processes, to protect against keyloggers and other tracking tools.

KeePass can import from over 30 other password managers, including Kaspersky Password Manager 4 and RoboForm Desktop 7. The free LastPass 2.0 wasn't on the list, but I had no trouble exporting to CSV and importing that file to KeePass. Doing so did require that I match up the fields from my CSV file with field names in KeePass, but a preview window made it easy to see when I got the matchup right. Do note that any time you transfer passwords via a plain-text CSV file you should securely delete that file afterward.

By default your database is strictly local. You can move it to a USB drive for added security. Conversely, you can sync it to a URL online in order to use it across multiple PCs. Of course you must supply the online storage; it's a very do-it-yourself system.

Configurable Password Generation
Most password managers include a password generator. Most, like LastPass and RoboForm, let you choose which characters will be included. With next to no settings for password generation, Dashlane is an exception. KeePass's password generator deserves special attention for its flexibility.

With KeePass you can choose to include uppercase letters, lowercase letters or numbers. Where most password generators lump all the rest into "special characters," KeePass handles dash, underscore, and brackets separately from the rest. It can also optionally include the space character and "High ANSI" characters like ? and ?, if you find any applications that support them.

KeePass can generate hexadecimal keys of varying lengths, like those used for WEP and WPA authentication. It's even possible to define a pattern of character types that KeePass will match precisely. A preview tab displays a whole page of passwords matching the current pattern.
