Inside UPS' Worldport: How a shipping titan moves 2,000 packages every 17 seconds

DNP Inside UPS' Worldport facility how one of the world's shipping titans moves 2,000 packages every 17 seconds

Online shopping seems like a straightforward process: hunt down the perfect item, trudge through the checkout pipeline and await a package's inevitable arrival. The trip between a warehouse and your doorstep, however, involves meticulous organization on a massive scale. In order to pull off such a feat, United Parcel Service (UPS) relies on Worldport in Louisville, Ky.: a 5.2 million-square-foot processing facility that's capable of sorting up to 416,000 packages an hour. Within Worldport, 70 aircraft docks and 155 miles of conveyor belts await the arrival of packages from over 220 countries and territories. So, what happens when UPS gets ahold of those parcels destined for air delivery? The folks clad in brown took us inside their largest sorting hub to find out.

So that was 2012?. ? Tom's Cruise Blog

So that was 2012. It was an eventful and interesting year for us. I suppose it?s traditional around this time to review the year that?s just gone by, so here goes. This being a personal blog, this is a personal review ? this is what seemed important, memorable or significant to us.

  • First on any list has to be the sinking of the Costa Concordia, on 13 January. 30 people are known to have died and another two are missing, presumed dead, which brings the total of dead to 32. A further 64 people were injured to various degrees of severity. The investigation is still on-going, as are the trials ? the Captain has been charged with manslaughter, together with lesser charges ? and the hulk of the ship still lies in the water off Isola del Giglio. There was palpable shock throughout the cruise industry, indeed throughout the leisure travel industry, at these events ? how could a modern ship, incorporating the latest safety features and built to the highest standards, sink? Well, any floating object will cease to float if a big enough hole is punched in it below the waterline, and that?s what happened to Costa Concordia. The principal question is: exactly how did that come to happen? ? we still await the official report. Two more superlatives about this tragedy: first, she is by far the largest passenger ship to sink; and second, she may also be the most successful rescue operation, in that over 4,000 people got off her to safety. That said, I must also recognise that it was most fortunate that the sinking occurred so close to shore ? many people were able to swim to safety, and some people still in the water were picked up by local boats. Had the sinking occurred further out, or had she not come to rest on the shelf of rock, the death toll would have been much higher.
  • Next was the P&O Grand Event on 3 July. Not surprisingly in this record-breakingly-wet year it was raining during the Event itself and that did take some of the edge off it, but it was still fun in a very British masochistic way.
  • Third would be our long cruise this year, on Arcadia to the Canaries. It wasn?t the best cruise we?ve ever had but it was still enjoyable and we certainly found a lot to enjoy on Arcadia.
  • Finally would be the introduction by Cunard and P&O of the new fare schemes. P&O calls them ?Vantage? fares: once you?ve booked such a fare you?ll get some recompense (probably?in the form of on-board credit) if the fare is subsequently reduced. There have been a lot of negative comments about this initiative, and I do recognise the way it could be abused ? for example if the cruise line labels all reduced fares as ?Getaway? fares then that doesn?t count as a reduction to the Vantage fare, so no compensation would be due. However I think it should be welcomed. US passengers have enjoyed protection like this for years, and now we may get it as well.

That?s about it. There were a lot of other stories in what was I think a tight year for UK cruising, and there are some indications that 2013 will be even tighter. But the stories for this year have not yet emerged; when they do, and if they seem interesting, I?ll blog about them here.

And finally, I?d like to wish all my readers a happy and successful New Year.

Myanmar launches airstrikes on Kachin rebels

The Myanmar government has carried out airstrikes this week against ethnic rebels in northern Kachin state, raising fresh concerns about reforms and a fragile peace processes.

By Simon Roughneen,?Correspondent / January 2, 2013

Laiza, Myanmar; and Bangkok, Thailand

Heavy fighting between the Myanmar Army and the rebel Kachin Independence Army (KIA), is raising concern that a major escalation of violence is under way in the region, casting a shadow over Myanmar's much-touted reforms.

The Myanmar Army offensive ? which includes the use of helicopter gunships and fighter jets ? comes after weeks of heavy fighting at outposts about 10 miles outside the KIA headquarters on the Myanmar-China frontier.?

The government of?Myanmar (also known as Burma) and the KIA signed a cease-fire in 1994, but that came apart in June 2011,?even as the government embarked on reforms that include tentative cease-fires with some of the myriad other ethnic minority armed groups that have long fought in the border regions.?

With peace talks between the government and KIA stalled, President Thein Sein has told the Army only to fight in self-defense?in Kachin,?but the latest violence could signal that this request has been rescinded, or that the reformist president is being ignored by the Army.

?The situation is very tense. The bombers are bombing just about four or five miles from the town here,? says Joseph Nbwi Naw, a Kachin Catholic priest in the KIA headquarters Laiza, a valley town separated from Yunnan, China, only by the 1-ft. deep, 20-yard-wide Jeyang River.

?People are digging trenches and foxholes in the town,? says La Nan, KIA spokesperson.

Ethnic groups in the northern part of the country have long accused the government of repression, and have been fighting for greater autonomy.

The Kachin ? supported by a smaller militia known as the All Burma Students Democratic Front ? countered a Myanmar Army attempt to resupply soldiers near the front line Dec. 14, by overrunning an Army position near a Buddhist temple on the main road from Laiza to Myitkina, the government-held state capital of the Kachin region ? upping the ante in a grueling 18-month war.

Since the fighting ramped up in mid December, at least one civilian and an unverifiable numbers of soldier militia members have died.

La Nan told the Monitor Wednesday that ?our people in Pangwa say that the Burmese jets flew 1 kilometer into China yesterday before attacking us,??echoing claims posted online alongside numerous video clips of Myanmar helicopters and jets attacking KIA positions?and flying over camps set up for some of the around 100,000 civilians made homeless by the fighting.

The Myanmar government first denied and then acknowledged that the Army is carrying out the airstrikes, after accusing the KIA of attacking power stations during the Christmas holidays. All told, the KIA carried out ?101 mine attacks in Kachin State and from 18 May 2011 to 21 December 2012,? according to the government mouthpiece The New Light of Myanmar, implying?that the government considers the airstrikes a reaction to rebel attacks.

Questions about the latest fighting sent to the Myanmar president's office had gone unanswered at time of writing, but?a report on the government's Myawaddy news said that the Army seized a rebel outpost on Dec. 30 "with the help of airstrikes in the region."

Kachin is the northernmost state in Myanmar and is a mountainous and resource-rich region known for its jade. There has been fighting around lucrative mines near the town of Hpakant in recent months.

The KIA was set up in 1961 after the government reneged on promises to devolve powers to the Kachin and other ethnic groups, as a military junta seized power at the start of what turned out to be five decades of Army rule.

The estimated 1 million Kachin are mostly Baptist Christian, in a country of almost 60 million where close to 90 percent of people are thought to be Buddhist and an estimated 65 percent are Burman, the majority ethnic group.?

The KIA, once accused of part-funding operations through opium cultivation, has an estimated 10,000 soldiers but is mostly armed with light weaponry, while the 400,000 Myanmar Army is among the best-equipped in southeast Asia, with a long history of brutality in the hill and jungle ethnic minority borderlands.

Nlam Bok Mai, a Kachin mother who is among more than 7,000 people living in cramped shacks in Jeyang camp outside Laiza, told the Monitor that she fled with her family in June 2011 as the Myanmar Army approached their village, 25 miles away: ?We did not wait there for the Army to come, we did not want to get caught in any fighting.?

Strategic Social Media Marketing: Beyond Posting on Facebook ...

Strategic Social Media Marketing: Beyond Posting on Facebook

Strategic social media marketing includes planning and sophisticated understanding of the nature of the medium as well as the tools and systems that introduce efficiencies and generate return on investment (ROI).
The degree to which businesses believe social media marketing is equivalent to posting comments and pictures on Facebook is equivalent to the degree to which their social media marketing efforts will fail.
Here are ten (of many) elements that frame the way professional social media marketers conduct themselves.? These are the things social media marketers do that set them apart from the intern or employee who was hired to be a graphic artist and finds Facebook on their task list.

Working within Cultures

Each social network has its own unique culture. Culture is a major influence in the content, nature, frequency and length of posts; the degree of interaction with other entities and other factors.? Understanding the expectations and preferences of social networks and how to translate that into social media marketing success separates businesses who achieve ROI from those who do not.
For example, LinkedIn has an overtly business culture. People come to Facebook for leisure and fun.? Identical content and expectations for engagement between these two Internet social networks will be about as successful as constantly talking about one?s home life in the office or vice versa. Businesses must embrace the differences and employ them to develop a competitive advantage.

Leveraging the Medium

To date, no person has ever logged onto any Internet social network hoping for the hard sell. The vast majority of people who connect with companies online are already customers. The opportunity, therefore, is for businesses to create an online destination for people. This helps keep the company in the consideration set for renewals or future purchases, educate the current customer about additional offerings from a company they already know and trust, enhance and deepen the relationship with current customers and generate referrals on the channel from those loyal customers.
?Buy my stuff,? ostracizes brands on Internet social networks.? Frequent plying of wares relegates the business to broadcasting to an empty channel, as does misuse of connections acquired online. Success in social media marketing comes from developing and enhancing relationships.

Utilizing a Content Marketing Strategy

Ad hoc
ideas for Facebook posts are fine but they will never render the ROI of an integrated content marketing plan which may include, for example:

  • Key Persona Identification ? Identify your ideal current and prospective customers. Research their social media habits and preferences.
  • Define your brand experience ? and create an online ?voice? and presentation consistent with that experience.
  • Annual Marketing Calendar creation ? looking forward 12 months for proactive content generation opportunities
  • Utilizing content on more than one medium ?Example: Use story ideas for blog posts, post those blogs to your website, link to the blog from the social media outlet. This markets the article to a broader audience, drives consumers closer to the point of conversion (your website), creates opportunities for organic acquisition of inbound links to your website, which is beneficial for the website?s search rank, and provides additional use for content already created.
  • Identifying and engaging with influencers ? on the channel, in the industry, in the geographic region?and plotting a course to become an influencer in online conversations.
  • Cross-sharing with other social media networks ? If and when to do it, and how to augment individual posts with network-specific features such as Twitter Hashtags.
  • Tracking mechanisms - Creating and implementing them to measure and improve the reach and impact of individual posts and the overall effort.
  • Final-draft Content ? Your brand should be represented by relevant, thematic content void of grammatical and spelling errors, text abbreviations and the like.

Integrating with Other Marketing Channels

Social media cannot succeed in a silo. It requires support from other channels with broader reach. This is one reason calls to action for TV commercials and print advertisements drive people to a Facebook Page. Businesses should set goals for each marketing channel and examine where each can synergize as well as the trade-offs.
For example, will your TV and print ads drive people to a conversion page on your website or a custom tab on your Facebook page? If the goal is near-term new lead generation, the former is most effective; the latter if the goal is a lifelong connection to a potential source of multiple warm leads in the longer term.

Listening & Engaging

Beyond Google Alerts, social media marketing professionals use sophisticated tools and techniques to monitor sentiment and mentions of the brand, people, the industry, products, services and other subject matter on mainstream traditional and Internet news sources, online forums, blogs and social media platforms. Analyzing these interactions and incorporating them into the plan and implementation improves results.
Monitoring the outbound news feeds of social media assets owned by your clients, prospects, partners and community influencers and engaging in those online conversations is an essential component of developing a brand?s social media presence. This also gets your brand name and the link to your Facebook page in front of additional people, which creates opportunities to expand your social media reach.

Social media monitoring is a central component of Online Reputation Management (ORM), which social media marketing professionals integrate with social media marketing and a brand?s overall Internet marketing effort.

Advertising

Advertising on Internet social networks takes on many forms and can be an effective means of content marketing and expanding reach. Due to the nature of the medium, setting goals and budgets and optimizing campaigns is very different than traditional advertising. Strategic A/B testing and behavioral targeting with multiple versions of ads and conversion plans that address every step in the sales funnel are essential to achieve ROI.

Social Network Optimization (SNO)

Also called Social Media Optimization (SMO), this practice includes integration of social media marketing with search engine marketing, blog marketing, social bookmarking, local search marketing, place-based hyper-local? marketing, ORM, photo and video sharing and placing Internet social network assets in their best position to be found on a keyword search within the network.
The use of keywords is fundamental to virtually every aspect of Internet marketing. In social media marketing, this means strategic use and placement of keywords in profiles, tweets, page titles and other aspects of a company?s social media presence.

Employing Social Media Marketing Tools

Engagement platforms, listening tools and social media dashboards enable businesses to be much more efficient in monitoring, scheduling, listening and channeling social media activity. HootSuite (http://hootsuite.com/p_1676/8hyzno?d=upgrade ), for example, provides all of these features and some tracking tools. Price points vary with features and algorithms.

Collecting, Analyzing and Using Analytics

Social media networks, Facebook in particular, provide web analytics that can help to improve the ROI of social media marketing. Identifying which information is most relevant to goals for the business and the channel, interpreting them and making changes to utilize the information is intricate work.

Incorporating Legal, Privacy & Copyright Considerations

Just because an image is on Google doesn?t mean it?s okay to use on your Facebook feed. Knowing where the lines are drawn for the brand experience and good taste is one thing; privacy and copyright laws for social media are another. Operating under vetted policies and procedures expedites social media marketing ROI by preventing your company from getting sued.

What This Means for Your Business

Social media professionals incorporate all of the above elements and others into a social media marketing action plan? to help companies achieve ROI by improvements in customer retention and Share of Wallet (SOW) and generating referral business.
The degree to which your business is being represented online by non-professionals is the degree to which it presents itself as amateur in everything it does.

Language learning begins in utero, study finds; Newborn memories of oohs and ahs heard in the womb

Jan. 2, 2013 ? Newborns are much more attuned to the sounds of their native language than first thought. In fact, these linguistic whizzes can up pick on distinctive sounds of their mother tongue while in utero, a new study has concluded.

Research led by Christine Moon, a professor of psychology at Pacific Lutheran University, shows that infants, only hours old showed marked interest for the vowels of a language that was not their mother tongue.

"We have known for over 30 years that we begin learning prenatally about voices by listening to the sound of our mother talking," Moon said. "This is the first study that shows we learn about the particular speech sounds of our mother's language before we are born."?

Before the study, the general consensus was that infants learned about the small parts of speech, the vowels and the consonants, postnatally. Moon added. "This study moves the measurable result of experience with individual speech sounds from six months of age to before birth," she said. The findings will be published in Acta Paediatrica in late December.

For the study Moon tested newborn infants shortly after birth while still in the hospital in two different locations: Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Wash., and in the Astrid Lindgren Children's Hospital in Stockholm. Infants heard either Swedish or English vowels and they could control how many times they heard the vowels by sucking on a pacifier connected to a computer.

Co-authors for the study were. Hugo Lagercrantz, a professor at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden as well as a member of the Nobel Assembly, and Patricia Kuhl, Endowed Chair for the Bezos Family Foundation for Early Childhood Learning and Co-Director of the University of Washington's Institute for Learning and Brain Sciences.

The study tested newborns on two sets of vowel sounds -- 17 native language sounds and 17 foreign language sounds, said Kuhl. The researchers tested the babies' interest in the vowel sounds based on how long and often they sucked on a pacifier. Half of the infants heard their native language vowels, and the other half heard the foreign vowels. "Each suck will produce a vowel until the infant pauses, and then the new suck will produce the next vowel sound," said Kuhl.

In both countries, the babies listening to the foreign vowels sucked more, than those listening to their native tongue regardless of how much postnatal experience they had. This indicated to researchers that they were learning the vowel sounds in utero.

"These little ones had been listening to their mother's voice in the womb, and particularly her vowels for ten weeks. The mother has first dibs on influencing the child's brain," said Kuhl. "At birth, they are apparently ready for something novel."

While other studies have focused on prenatal learning of sentences or phrases, this is the first study to show learning of small parts of speech that are not easily recognized by melody, rhythm or loudness. Forty infants were tested in Tacoma and another 40 in Sweden. They ranged in age from 7 to 75 hours after birth.

Vowel sounds were chosen for the study because they are prominent, and the researchers thought they might be noticeable in the mother's ongoing speech, even against the noisy background sounds of the womb.

The study shows that the newborn has the capacity to learn and remember elementary sounds of their language from their mother during the last 10 weeks of pregnancy (the sensory and brain mechanisms for hearing are intact at 30 weeks of gestational age).

"This is a stunning finding," said Kuhl. "We thought infants were 'born learning' but now we know they learn even earlier. They are not phonetically na?ve at birth."

Prior to the kinds of studies like this one, , it was assumed that newborns were "blank slates," added Lagercrantz. He said that although it's been shown that infants seem to be attuned to sounds of their mother tongue, this same effect now seems to occur before birth. This surprised him.

"Previous studies indicate that the fetus seems to remember musical rhythms," he said. "They now seem to be able to learn language partially."

Kuhl added that infants are the best learners on the planet and while understanding a child's brain capacity is important for science, it's even more important for the children. "We can't waste early curiosity."

"The fact that the infants can learn the vowels in utero means they are putting some pretty sophisticated brain centers to work, even before birth," she said.
