UK government report criticizes growth strategy
LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's growth strategy of tax cuts and deregulation will not provide a fast track to economic prosperity and needs to be reassessed, according to a government-commissioned review published on Wednesday.
Lord Heseltine, the former Conservative Party deputy prime minister, warned in his six-month study on the government's economic policy that "continuing as we are is not an acceptable option."
Heseltine, who was asked to write a sweeping economic review by the government, called for a "war psychology" to overcome the economic crisis and urged for an end to ministerial uncertainty on crucial issues such as energy and aviation because "the world will not stand still ? and nor must we".
However, despite cutting remarks into every aspect of Britain's low growth, the report was welcomed by the government.
"I wanted Lord Heseltine to do what he does best: challenge received wisdom and give us ideas on how to bring government and industry together. He has done exactly that. This is a report bursting with ideas and we will study it very carefully," finance minister George Osborne said.
In the 228-page report, entitled No Stone Unturned, Heseltine makes 89 recommendations, including the need to strengthen controls on foreign takeovers to block deals deemed unfavorable to Britain.
Ministers only intervene in foreign takeovers in cases that may affect national security or when media companies are involved.
Mergers are formally assessed if the company being taken over has an annual turnover of 70 million pounds ($112.58 million) or more, or if the new entity would control 25 percent or more of its market.
If not an issue of national security, the assessment is largely seen through the interests of the consumer as opposed to the wider strategic needs of British industry.
"I reject the notion that regulation in itself hinders growth. Good, well designed, regulation can stop the abuse of market power and improve the way markets work to the benefit of business employees and consumers," Heseltine wrote in the report.
He avoided criticizing ministers directly, but said that "it takes too long for decisions to be made" by the government and the message amongst Britons is "that the UK does not have a strategy for growth and wealth creation".
The report challenges government policy on a vast range of specific issues such as immigration, ways to boost infrastructure spending and the lack of a decision on where to build a four runway airport around London.
"The review raises a number of important issues that impact on the government's ability to interact effectively with business throughout the country," business minister Vince Cable said.
"Lord Heseltine's findings show where government can improve its performance in delivering better interventions. We will now need time to consider its numerous recommendations and will respond in the coming months."

NYC tries to recover from storm as marathon nears
NEW YORK (AP) ? Five days before New York hosts its namesake marathon, its public transportation is shut down, its airports closed, its streets flooded and power out in many neighborhoods.
On Monday, as superstorm Sandy started to pound the city, NYC Marathon officials insisted they would have enough time before Sunday's race to prepare the course and for runners to travel to New York.
But it was uncertain Tuesday when life in the city would return to normal, and organizers promised an update on marathon preparations.
Nearly 20,000 amateur international runners need to get in the country. Another 30,000 or so American entrants must get to the starting line; the family and friends of runners must somehow find a way to their viewing spots.
And on Tuesday, it was unclear when public transit, river crossings and airports would reopen.
The marathon pours an estimated $350 million into the city each year. But it also requires major support from city departments that are being strained by the storm.
New York Road Runners President Mary Wittenberg said Monday they had a long list of contingency plans already in place to deal with any obstacles that might arise. The biggest concerns centered on getting runners to the start on Staten Island.
The 26.2-mile route through the five boroughs mostly avoids areas considered at highest risk for flooding.
"We have time on our side," Wittenberg said Monday.
NYRR organizes about 50 events a year and has dealt with issues ranging from heavy snow to lightning to security concerns in the past.
"We've been through close to it all," Wittenberg said.
Organizers expected to reschedule flights to get all the elite athletes to New York in time. Wittenberg hoped that most of the amateur international runners signed up would make it. The hours for number pickup will probably be extended for those who arrive late Saturday.
For runners who can't get to New York, the deadline to withdraw from the race and guarantee a spot in next year's event likely will be pushed back from Wednesday to Saturday. Under normal NYRR policy, organizers won't refund entry fees, and runners would have to pay again next year.
The ceremonial finish-line painting scheduled for Wednesday was canceled, along with a news conference Tuesday. A children's run Thursday was moved from Central Park to an indoor track, and the pavilion in the park has been taken down for the time being. Wittenberg said generators or backup systems were in place in key locations.
Extra time is always built into planning, and 700 part-time workers and 8,000 volunteers ensure the course can be set up quickly.

When healthy eating becomes a deadly fixation

It may seem paradoxical, but the desire to eat healthy can kill you. So says Colorado physician Steven Bratman, author of Health Food Junkies. He coined the phrase ?orthorexia nervosa,? pairing the Greek prefix for ?correct? with the same suffix as the eating disorder anorexia nervosa.

?It?s being so obsessed with eating healthy food that it begins to harm you in other ways,? says Dr. Bratman (orthorexia.com). ?I get one story a week about people dying from orthorexia.?
Orthorexia isn?t a medical diagnosis. Usually, it merely affects quality of life, says Bratman.
?Intense diets in many ways are more disruptive than a drug,? Bratman says. ?Drugs have side effects. A diet that socially isolates you is a fantastic psychological side effect. Somehow you?re ignoring the fact you?re paying a huge price for what you?re doing. The illusion of control is a big part of it.?
One Westerlo mother imposed a severe diet upon her son to try and help his ADD and food sensitivities. ?He wasn?t allowed to eat gluten, cow milk products, corn, soy, egg whites, peanuts or mustard,? says the mother, who requested anonymity. ?It set him apart at home, school, restaurants, family gatherings and parties. He felt left out and went overboard whenever he cheated. My husband didn?t buy into it and fed him forbidden foods. This caused arguments. The diet did more harm than good.?
The same brain chemicals that regulate appetite also influence emotion, mood and the propensity for depression, anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorder, explains physician Sharon Alger-Mayer, a clinical nutritionist with Albany Medical Center.
?Individuals with a genetic tendency to be anxious or obsessive compulsive ? if they start to control their food, they?re much more at risk for having the eating restrictions start to snowball than people who don?t have that genetic makeup,? she says.
Orthorexia can have serious health consequences, she says. ?I?ve seen people with extremely rigid eating patterns,? she says. ?They can be iron deficient or low in zinc and other nutrients from animal proteins. They may have hair loss or lose their menstrual cycle. They don?t meet the full criteria of anorexia nervosa. They don?t see themselves as being too heavy. They may not start wanting to be thin. They have a goal of being more fit and healthy. They want to be very careful about the foodstuffs that they put in their body. If the level of restriction drops below a safe range, it gets out of control and, in fact, dangerous. It starts to take on a life of its own. It becomes so rigid and so compulsive, they can?t break out of the cycle.?

Orthorexia and anorexia have the same motivation ? controlling what goes in your mouth ? says Clinical Social Worker Terri Gerber of Niskayuna, who is certified in the treatment of eating disorders. ?Healthy eating is great, but if you are a perfectionist, be careful!? she says. ?Remember, everything in moderation!?
Gerber describes one patient ? a high school senior ? who was unconcerned about weight or body image, but was a strict vegan. She lost weight, her periods stopped, and she grew very ill.
?This person regained her weight but remained very rigid and narrow with what she ate,? Gerber says.? ?She went to camp and had to bring her own food.? Everybody else ate what was there. When she went to look for colleges, she was looking for one with a cafeteria that would serve vegan selections.?
Treatment for orthorexics and anorexics is similar, Gerber says. ?It means restoring their weight and, if female, their menstrual cycle,? she says. ?They must learn to talk back to the distorted thinking that is part of an eating disorder or they risk relapse. They must also learn healthy coping and thinking skills for all the times in life that we, as human beings, can?t be in control. They have to learn how to deal in a healthy way with fear and inadequacy, which are normal feelings that are part of the human experience.?
It?s right to want to eat healthy, just don?t get carried away, agrees Bratman, who used to be a health food fanatic himself.
?Eating healthy food is obviously not a problem,? he says. ?That?s absurd. My idea of healthy diet ? don?t buy a whole lot of processed foods. Eating fruits and vegetables, along with other stuff, is a good idea. Be reasonable and don?t worry about it too much. You shouldn?t be fat. You should exercise. You shouldn?t be spending much of your life thinking about it, or you?re postponing living. You?re not in the moment. You?re not involved with real things like loving people or being creative.?
David Guzman, program director for Method Fitness in Manhattan, eats conscientiously except for one weekly cheat day. He advises clients to do the same.
?Some of them can become very obsessive about eating healthy,? he says. ?It?s OK to be a health food nut, as long as you give yourself a reward once in a while. If you don?t build in that release valve, you can drive yourself crazy.?

One week before Election Day, President Obama remains in Washington, overseeing the federal response to hurricane Sandy, which has devastated coastal areas in the Northeast and mid-Atlantic. He canceled his campaign events for Monday, Tuesday, and now Wednesday. ?

These Are Google's Biggest Advertisers, Ranked ... - Business Insider
Ask.com -- which competes with Google for search queries -- is one of Google's biggest advertisers, as ranked by dollars spent in Q3 2012, according to research on more than $1 billion dollars worth of AdWords spent via WordStream, a company that specializes in Google search ads. (The vast majority of Google's revenue comes from search.)
Ask is Google's second-biggest advertiser, spending $155,000 a day in Q3 2012.
The top advertiser is Phoenix University, the online school.
Amazon, another business that competes with Google for shopping-related search queries, spent $132,000 a day.
WordStream CEO Larry Kim tells us he saw a big decline in the average cost per click (CPC) and significant growth in ad impressions and clicks during the quarter.
Overall we?re seeing a bunch of changes in the Google economy. We?re seeing a huge growth in ad impressions, combined with lower costs per click. We think this is a win-win for advertisers and Google. Advertisers can drive more customers for less spend, thereby getting more value, and Google is less reliant on those crazy expensive keywords which weren?t that sustainable in the long run, and will probably pick up more advertisers in the process because there?s more value there now.

In the nearly 10 years since it?s release, ?The Nightmare Before Christmas? has become a stop-motion classic of a duo-holiday cannon.? It tells the tale of Jack Skellington, Pumpkin?King of Halloween Town, who grows bored of his Halloween ways. Happening upon a portal to Christmas Town, he is struck by the existence of a whole new reality.? Grasped by the vision to make Christmas his own, Jack leads his followers into the unknown with great spirit, but little knowledge. Musical mishaps and misaligned festive mingling ensues: a great film for the family and just plain fun.
However, Tim Burton?s The Nightmare Before Christmas is much more than an imaginative ode of the season and an entertaining movie; it also provides an illuminating case study of unorthodox change.? Through a different lens, the story of Jack?s journey, and the impact of his ?vision? on others, tells a timeless business tale?one which illustrates different features of leadership and change which can be analyzed and applied to business practice.
Jack?s Perspective
The story begins with a leader who has grown bored with a role that has become personally redundant and unfulfilling; the King of Pumpkin Town is bored. Jack? craves inspiration, creativity, and reconnection to his main purpose in life. Recognizing the need for change, and happening upon a portal to a previously unknown dimension of opportunity, in this case Christmas Town, Jack jumps?and takes his followers along for a disastrous ride.? So thrilled by the opportunity to venture into a new industry and so focused on his need to have something new, Jack assumed all of the people would benefit from this change and his personal problems would be fixed.? Unfortunately, Jack did not possess any knowledge of this new industry; his attempts to ?deconstruct? Christmas into its core physical components are woefully misguided.?
Jack the Leader and the Four ?Ps?
Though a well-liked and highly-animated leader, Jack?s initiative was doomed to fail from the start because he did not have proper conditions to support his plan for change. According to Larry Stout, in order to initiate change, the proper conditions must exist to serve as catalyst and foundation alike; these are the four ?Ps?: People, Place, Position, and Period (Stout, 2001, p. 42-46).
People, Place, Position, and Period
Jack had the people. The people of Halloween Town revered him as their leader. Jack had the position. In Halloween Town, he could make things happen.??
However, in the context of place, Jack gets stuck when he decides to lead his people well outside his field of expertise.? In short, Halloween Town and Christmas Town are as different as, well, as different as Halloween and Christmas. Though well-versed in all things Halloween, Jack?s lack of alternative festive knowledge leads to inevitable disaster.? Master of the autumnally macabre, the period (Christmas) Jack led was misaligned with his venture from its wintery start.?
As a result, the people?s view of Jack?s leadership changed; they were unable to follow him simply anywhere.? Warned by at least one member of his community who saw the misfortune waiting in the wings, Jack did not listen. Lacking an inner team with whom to explore, support and transition the change Jack desired, what transpired is not unexpected.
Leadership & Jack
Leaders and managers exist in all organizations and are essential to the development and advancement of a company?especially during change. Employees of all levels need guidance and support to adapt with the changing work environment and rely on a well-planned strategy for the company. While a leader and manager within a business environment play different roles, both are essential to the success of the organization. (Kotter, 2001)
Jack?s followers did not lack for enthusiasm, but sorely lacked the perspective, skills and knowledge critical to the business of Christmas; while processes evolved, as Jack matched people by their closest related skill set, a working structure did not stand a chance. Moreover, worsening matters in translation, Jack did not monitor the change process which resulted in compounded misunderstandings and a conflicted definition of the holidays.
Perhaps the greatest failing of Jack as a leader was his lack of prior failure.? A natural leader within his area of expertise, Jack did not have to work at developing his followers, nor listen to any of their ideas.? After all, everyone looked to Jack to lead. In this way, his leadership appeared more of a cult following rather than inspiration and motivation.? Even venturing into such new territory as Christmas, he failed to address the team for input; when input was offered in the form of offering, Jack simply pushed forward: a key failure in communications.? As with any change, clarity of communications from management and leadership is key for success.
Change: Influence and Implementation
1.? Influencing people to change:
Jack was followed unconditionally by devoted ?ready to where? followers, who he had no problem convincing to do as he asked.? Leaders require ?ready to where? followers to help motivate and move the change plans forward.? However, the people of Halloween Land were devoted to a fault, not paying attention to their own ideas, needs for clarification or need for change. The one resistor in the story, Sally, attempted to warn Jack of the potential of disaster, but Jack did not listen. The disaster of Jack?s plan showed the importance of resistors in change and the vital role has in developing a solid plan for change.? Jack?s personal need for change created the underlying urgency, but because of poor communication, his followers could not understand how to achieve that change.
The people followed Jack because that is what they always did, not because he created a sense of urgency with clear guidelines and meanings for the change. (Jellison, 2007, p. 48-50)? Jack?s plan was severely underdeveloped, which created an unclear vision and resultant miscommunication. The elements of an effective vision include the use of a mission statement, along with a description of the purpose, values and direction of the change (Yukl, 2009, p. 123). The lack of this led to Jack?s inability to monitor the progress of the plans.? Although Jack delegated, the people didn?t understand the purpose of their tasks. With so much focus on the end product (a Halloween-esque version of Christmas), Jack spared none on the process of getting there: motivating, monitoring and adapting to the needs of the process.
2. Change implementation:
The success of change implementation is dependent on the leader?s behaviours. Jack?s actions during the change implementation lacked effective communication of a clear vision, lack of urgency for the need of change, and neglected to monitor the process of change (Yukl, 2009, p.130).? Quite simply, Jack did not fully understand the true meaning of Christmas. In his process of attempted understanding, he kept to himself and learned the only way he knew how: scientific method and logic. He didn?t look into other areas of skill development to become fully competent. This lack of competency created the initial miscommunication, as the townspeople could not possibly fully understand a concept that escaped even their leader.? In the end, Jack proved that you can?t lead what you don?t know.
How Jack?s role can be applied to the business world:
When leading change in a business environment, it is important to have clear vision and purpose for the change. The leader must be driven by more than personal need for change and conditions that support change need to exist. Influencing people to change requires an assortment of different followers, all of which need to be listened to for further development of change. Leaders need to be efficient in listening and communication. This applies to the employees and all of the stakeholders that have invested interest in the organization. Customer, employees, general public and investors need to be heard to comply with any modifications of the organization. Managers and leaders play equally essential roles in leading change. Jack?s leadership crisis shows what can happen if these components are not implemented in the change process. These are lessons we as emerging leaders can take to heart.

Nagging feeling led missing teens' searcher back to bridge ...
Something about the bridges haunted Monica Caison.
Her search teams had spent two weeks looking for a car with two teens from Catawba County who had vanished on a trip to Myrtle Beach. An intense search along I-77 had yielded nothing, and on Sunday they were in their third day of scouring the fringes of I-20 between Columbia and Florence.
They had climbed the roadway banks already, hacking through jungle-dense vegetation in places, without finding a clue.
?There was something about it,? Caison said Monday. ?I just didn?t feel good. I said, ?Let?s go back in and get a second look.???
Caison and her volunteer team of 15 decided on a new approach: They would check the bridges from the interstate?s medians rather than the sides.
Buck Creek bridge, 20 miles east of Columbia, was the first. At the base of the span, out of sight of motorists, they found a car bumper. A searcher kicked it over. Still attached was what authorities in two states were hunting ? N.C. license plate BBD-8844. Just beyond it was the still, dark water of Buck Creek that had swallowed the car.
?I don?t see how these people found that wreck,? said Jim Matthews, sheriff of Kershaw County. ?They are to be commended.?
Aimed for sunrise
Jake Ziegler, 18, and Ray Pierce, 17, seniors at Bandys High School in Catawba County, left a party in the early hours of Oct. 13. They told friends they were going to take Ziegler?s 2006 Pontiac G6 to Myrtle Beach, about four hours away, to catch the sunrise.
When they failed to return, authorities began a search by ground and air.
Among those helping was the Wilmington-based CUE Center for Missing Persons. CUE, which stands for Community United Effort, was started in 1994 by Monica Caison. She was looking to get involved in charity work and decided to focus on people who were missing.
Today, her organization has 10,000 trained volunteers across the nation and continues to grow. They have helped more than 9,000 families to date.
Caison, 49, a mother of five and grandmother of three, runs the organization from Wilmington. She has worked with police across the country in missing-person cases, augmenting their forces with her professionally trained volunteers.
She often goes on searches herself, and has been instrumental in helping find people. She draws no salary from the non-profit organization.
?I was one of 11 children,? Caison said. ?My parents were very strict and organized. Everyone in the family was involved in charity work. It was instilled in us when we were young. Life?s true meaning is trying to help others.?
Solved friend?s case
Caison grew up in St. Petersburg, Fla., and has had first-hand experience with missing persons.
A childhood friend, 20-year-old Melinda Harder, disappeared in July 1980. CUE does a road trip annually to draw attention to missing-persons cases, and in 2008, it went to St. Pete. Posters were put up around town showing pictures of Harder with an age-progression portrait.
A police investigator saw the poster at a convenience store while stopping for coffee. She looks like a Jane Doe from an earlier case she knew, thought the investigator.
DNA proved her right. Harder?s remains had been found in a rolled-up carpet in 1989, but no one knew who she was.
Through Caison?s efforts, Harder?s body was identified. Her killer has never been found.
Searching for teens
CUE entered the search for Ziegler and Pierce at the beginning.
Trained search-team members came from as far away as Florida and Virginia. They took time off from work, or helped out on weekends. Rotating volunteers every few days, Caison had a team of about 15 on the case at all times.
Volunteers come from many walks of life. Some are searching for their own missing family members, others are in public service or retired from the military, police or fire agencies. Some have lost family to homicide and find it therapeutic to help others.
Caison?s troops started along I-77 and worked south. They checked for skid marks or tire tracks leading away from the highway. They drove along the edge of woods lining the road. When they didn?t have a clear view into the woodland, they would stop and hike in, up to a half-mile, looking for the car.
On Friday, they began looking on I-20 East with the same routine: Look for anything out of place, any disturbance that might hint at a wayward car.
By midday Sunday, they?d finished their canvass of the interstate, but the bridges were still nagging Caison.
Only trace at edge
Buck?s Creek was the first bridge they rechecked. Caison dropped a team of four off to walk down the grassy median. As they approached the water, they saw some debris, then the bumper.
Sheriff Matthews said the car apparently came out of a curve and into the median, threading a narrow pocket between guard posts on either side of the road. A slight incline at the top of the embankment sent the car airborne. It cleared a fence and some trees at the bottom of the slope and disappeared into Buck?s Creek.
Ziegler?s parents, who were driving a nearby highway to look for clues, soon arrived. Caison comforted them but kept them away from the crash site.
Matthews said he walked the scene Sunday and was amazed Caison?s team had located the car containing the teens? bodies. There were no skid marks on the road, no sign that anything had happened there.
?If the bumper had stayed on the car,? he said, ?I don?t know when those boys would have been found.?

Qld uranium may go through Barrier Reef | Eco News
The new uranium mining committee set up by Queensland?s conservative Liberal National Party state government has said all export options are on the table, including shipping it out through ports on the Great Barrier Reef.
The comments come as the United Nations environmental arm, UNESCO, considers whether to list the reef as a World Heritage site in danger and amidst strong criticism from environmentalists.
In a report earlier this year, UNESCO identified shipping as one of the most pressing threats to the reef?s future.
The Queensland government this month lifted a long-standing ban on the mining of uranium in Queensland, despite saying before and after the March election it had no plans to do so.
The LNP Premier Campbell Newman has named a five-member panel to oversee the recommencement of the industry, including looking at how the uranium will be exported.
Committee chairman and Central Highlands councillor Paul Bell says all options are being examined, including shipping it from ports adjacent to the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier reef.
Most of the state?s uranium deposits are in the north of the state and Mr Bell says both Townsville and Cairns could be used to export uranium.
?We haven?t seen any significant reaction to any of the options that we?ve probably started to look at in regards to ports, or the way in which uranium transport would be carried out in Queensland,? he told ABC News.
?It?s still very early days but we think all options should be investigated.?
Mr Bell also said the committee would look at whether uranium could be transported to the Adelaide to Darwin rail line, for export through either of those cities.
He said the committee would be talking with the South Australian and Northern Territory governments about that option.
?The discussions we?ll be having ? will be about ?how do you feel about increased tonnage coming through your place??.?
He said any reluctance would give the committee the impetus to have further discussions about the use of Queensland ports.
In a June report, UNESCO was highly critical of Australia?s management of the Great Barrier Reef.
It said coastal development, ports and shipping were among the most pressing threats, and there was no overall plan for the future sustainable development of the reef.
The Queensland and federal governments are currently compiling a strategic assessment of the entire reef area in response to UNESCO?s concerns.
It?s due to be presented to the UN body early next year.
Environmental activists say the new uranium committee is a stunt to fast-track mining of the ?toxic? substance.
The Wilderness Society?s Tim Seelig says the so-called ?world?s best practice? environmental and safety standards won?t count for anything if there is an accident during mining or transportation of uranium.
?There is no guaranteed safe extraction and movement of uranium,? Dr Seelig said in a statement.
?This is an industry that relies on crossed fingers and permanent good luck that nothing unexpected happens.?
Dr Seelig called into question the makeup of the committee and said members would fast-track uranium mining.
The Australian Conservation Foundation?s Dave Sweeney called on Mr Newman to back up his claim that uranium exports will earn Queensland tens of billions of dollars over the next two decades, providing thousands of jobs.
?Premier Newman?s claims run counter to the reality of the uranium sector in Australia,? Mr Sweeney said.
?Kakadu uranium miner Energy Resources of Australia has lost more than $180 million and BHP Billiton has walked away from its long-held plan for a massive expansion of the Olympic Dam mine in South Australia.?

Storm knocks down some web sites, but most stay online
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Despite outages at a few well-known web sites and ripple effects that occasionally slowed communications around the country, the Internet came through the massive storm that swamped New York and New Jersey with relatively minor problems.
Built for resiliency and buttressed by the adoption of cloud computing, the Internet functioned largely as it was supposed to, industry experts said, routing around major disruptions in one of its central network locations, New York City.
"You don't hear about big content providers going offline anymore," said Jeffrey Young, a spokesman for major delivery network Akamai Technologies Inc, which has servers spread among some 1,100 communications set-ups. "We can route around issues that are occurring."
New York has two major exchange centers where U.S. backbone telecommunication providers meet data from undersea cables, said Doug Madory, senior analyst at Renesys Corp, which monitors Internet response times. A number of network addresses were inaccessible on Tuesday afternoon, including many in the New York area, and connection times for others were slower than normal, he said, but the disruptions were limited.
Still, a handful of popular web sites, including Google's YouTube, AOL Inc's Huffington Post, and the network of sites owned by Gawker Media, did experience outages.
Social news site BuzzFeed and News Corp's financial site MarketWatch were also reduced to bare-bones versions as they regrouped on Tuesday.
At least some of the problems were the direct result of data centers losing power and being unable to fuel their own generators because of flooding.
Most web sites use commercial data centers rather than running their own computer servers, in part to ensure security and stability in emergencies. Many of those data centers offer back-up services elsewhere.
But New York data centers, including Internap and Datagram, went down due to the power and flooding problems. BuzzFeed, Huffington Post and Gawker all crashed because of Datagram.
"How dumb to locate datacenter in a flood zone. And how dumb to host Gawker servers there," Gawker founder Nick Denton wrote on Twitter. The company moved to blog platform Tumblr for a while, one of a number of creative workarounds made easier by more advanced web offerings. BuzzFeed moved everything onto Akamai and Amazon's web services arm.
An AOL spokeswoman said after Huffington Post's main data center went under that it had shifted to a backup data system in Newark. That worked until all three telecom firms serving that location went down.
"At approximately 3:30 a.m., network connectivity failed at the backup datacenter when all three of its providers each separately failed," said AOL's Erin Kurtz.
Huffington Post switched to a skeletal blog platform until it recovered at eight hours later.
Dow Jones and Datagram could not be reached immediately for comment. YouTube refused to say why it became unavailable, but Google's New York headquarters was closed by the storm. The company said the video site was available, if slow, for most users by Tuesday evening.
Many large and mid-sized companies adopted disaster planning for data after the September 11, 2001, attacks, making sure to have duplicates of core data in different locations. Smaller firms have taken the same route by moving to cloud computing, which generally spreads data across multiple facilities.
"The whole point of the cloud is that companies are insulated from outages really of any sort, absent a giant nuclear disaster," said Bernard Golden, vice president at enStratus Networks, a cloud software company. "You want your provider to have facilities in disparate-enough locations so that even if you have problems in a particular region, your service is still available."

It is the third or fourth session of Stephen?s Curriculum Studies colloquium and I experience the sensation of stepping outside my body to watch and listen to myself share a particular insight I?ve pulled from the reading and current discussion to my prior experience. As I approach a phrase I mean to use ironically, I raise my hands to insert air quotes and my mouth forms to produce a distinct clicking noise. Time stops. My peers and Stephen stare at me. I?ve just imitated Kieran and I acknowledge as such as an aside and the room erupts in laughter. Where did this come from? I did not do it consciously; it just happened.
Introduction
The goal in the next few pages is to explore the relationship between mimesis and education. Mimetics ? mimesis, imitation, mimicry ? is largely absent from educational conversations (excluding the ones included below, of course). I have hunches as to the reasons for why mimesis has fallen out of favor and plan to weave them through an analysis of perspectives on mimetics. The question that elicited this analysis originally concerned the virtues and ethics of mimesis in education, but it is the pragmatic that demands a shift in the question to an understanding of mimesis in the practice of pedagogy. Put bluntly, we (as participants in educational endeavors) are already always engage in mimesis ? so why not understand just what we are doing?
Personal and Current Contexts
We all would like to think that we are our own person, independent of any one else. We are told from birth (and as adults in every diversity training program) that we are unique. Pluralism at its best is the simultaneous acknowledgement and celebration of multiple perspectives. Plato?s critique of the poets in The Republic, Itard?s work with socializing Victor, and Locke?s focus on the virtuous gentleman calls these everyday presuppositions into question. How does mimesis occur in the everyday life of a school and, more broadly, in teaching and learning? As easy as it would be to ignore and explain away the phenomenon, something is left undone by not exploring it further.
At present Western culture is obsessed with owning and possessing ideas in the same way as owning cars, houses, and cell phones. In the age of digital technologies and global communication capabilities, is it possible ? is it realistic ? to attribute and own ideas? This begins a (dangerous) change of pace: Where does ownership lie when a student learns (absorbs) another?s idea? (e.g. from Plato, Locke, etc.). In due time I will call upon the ideas of others and reference their contributions to understandings of mimesis. Are they my ideas? Or are they simply the other writers that I cite? Is it a combination? Copyright law and traditional conceptualizations of who owns what have been transformed by the revolution in digital communications. Plagiarism is a damning offense in academia; you must cite and footnote and when in doubt, cite and footnote again.
Returning to how imitation and mimesis occurs within the realm of ideas and educational life, consider teacher identity. Is a teacher truly an innovative educator or are they imitating practices that have been deemed as good teaching? Considering content and curricula; Whose knowledge is being passed on to children (or constructed in children?s minds depending on your philosophical bent)? In what ways are teachers role models for students insomuch as we expect that student will embody the teacher?s own behavior and beliefs? How do students influence each other in their learning? Influence and model are concepts that attempt to name mimesis but lack a full expression of the phenomenon. Donald?s (1991) framework of mimetic culture will be helpful in moving forward.
Mimetic Culture
Merlin Donald in his book Origins of the Modern Mind (1991) presents a theory of human cognitive development grounded in evolution that offers an interesting perspective on mimesis in the generation of human culture. Put extremely simply, over time man evolved through cultural frameworks that involved the integration of specific cognitive tools that assisted in the development of humans. Mimetic representation operates in multiple modalities and includes gestures, facial expressions, and tone of voice. Donald?s framework posits that mimesis was key for the development of social groups, norms, and, ultimately, ?the first truly human culture? (1991, p. 193). The obvious lack of language in mimetic culture is intriguing. Without words and grammar, mimetic representation allowed for the development of tools, games, play, dance and other rituals that over time developed into the foundations of social structure. Mimesis remains central even to modern cultures: ?No matter how evolved our oral-linguistic culture, and no matter how sophisticated the rich varieties of symbolic material surrounding us, mimetic scenarios still form the expressive heart of human social interchange? (Donald, 1991, p. 189). From the perspective offered by this developmental model for human cognition, mimetic representation is not only integral to human culture but it is impossible to ignore.
Donald?s developmental framework situates mimesis as ?the most basic medium of human communication? (p. 188). Adopting this presupposition, we move to Plato, Itard, and Locke?s treatment of mimetics concerning teaching and learning.
Mimesis in Education: Plato, Itard, Locke
Plato tackles mimesis in Books III and X in The Republic. Mimetic representation of the epic poets, and in particular Homer, is Plato?s target. He creates a distinction between the (1) simple narrative and (2) mimesis in the sharing of a poet?s story. Simple narrative is appropriate and acceptable while mimetic poetry is forbidden. In the oral presentation of the poem a poet is not to imitate or embody the personae of the character who is speaking or acting. Imitation is dangerous for the listeners and for the virtuous man/city. Plato does not necessarily argue for the banishment of the oral tradition, but a severe censorship. With an eye to education, Plato would be wary of mimetic representation on the part of the teacher. Simple truths may be acceptable, but imitating another would be too risky for the greater good.
Itard?s Wild Boy of Aveyron offers a direct educational implementation of mimetic representation and mimetic theory, approach that is enacted to this day in Montessori schools (Ross, 2012). Itard takes Victor into his care and attempts to assimilate him into human society. While Victor is spoken at/to during his training it is presupposed that he cannot engage linguistically. The communication between Itard and Madame Gu?rin to Victor is based in imitating gestures and bodily movements. Considering Plato?s argument that humans should not be imitating truth but rather focused on identifying truth in and of itself, Victor?s mimetic behavior would suggest a certain emptiness, a going-through-the-motions without meaning or understanding. The features of mimetic culture that Donald (1991) suggests are demonstrate in the film. Victor communicates his needs and desires via bodily gestures and vocal grunting. What remains questionable is where mimetic representation transitions into learning and embodied knowing. Is Victor acting out meaningless (for him) actions as he is ?taught? his alphabet? Within the lens of Donald?s mimetic culture, would Victor have been able to absorb and transition more quickly? More efficiently? Can Donald?s developmental theory even be applied in this way?
Locke?s model for an ideal education, beyond the body, virtue, and academic curriculum, frames educational encounters as a series of conversations between the student and other learned, virtuous gentlemen. Connecting the mimetic cultures of the past, Donald (1991) threads mimetic culture to the present by referencing the Vygotskian pedagogy. Specifically, Vygotsky?s zone of proximal development (ZPD) is presented as a modern mimetically-based tool for teaching and learning. The types of conversations proposed by Locke seem to suggest the context of Vygotsky?s ZPD; communication cannot be too difficult or too simple but just right to encourage learning. In the modern day classroom this continues to evolve in the heterogeneous groupings minds so that the smarter will rub off on the not-as-smart. The result, in theory, is for the not-as smart minds to imitate the smarter and thereby becoming smarter. The conclusion is commonsensical and is, essentially, Locke?s argument that to educate a virtuous gentleman he must be surrounded by other virtuous individuals. Is this all that bad?

Kemp (2006) attempts the salvation of mimesis in education by approaching the phenomenon tangentially via hermeneutics. While mimesis has been pushed to the edge of pedagogy (Kemp describes it as repressed), understanding the teacher-student relationship is impossible without it. In education we traditionally focus on the formation of students. Drawing on Paul Ric?ur?s theory of narrative, Kemp reconnects mimesis to education:
We form and teach ourselves the moment we appropriate stories and ideas?which is a re-figuration. This is the actual mimesis, the creative representation (the putting forth) of a ?hermeneutic identity? ? We can only retrieve the narrative?s meaning because we already are familiar with the meaning given by the everyday world in which we live and in relation to which we understand the meaning of actions, goals, means, success, defeat and so forth. (Kemp, 2006, pp. 175-176)
Kemp references Aristotle?s critique of Plato?s denunciation of the poets in The Republic in ultimately framing all of culture as series of mimetic acts. Education, however, continues to resist mimesis: ?Today the position is that we in no way mimic anything in the process of learning? (Kemp, 2006, 177). This is not the case in other contexts; athletes imitate their coaches, musicians imitate their tutors, and craftspeople work as apprentices to masters. But what of unintentional mimetic representation? In what ways are educators and students acting out (unconsciously imitating) particular ways of being that are not their own? Or are these imitations their own? Even with the distinction of intentional and unintentional imitation, does an escape route exist?
?Mimesis must be understood as a productive imitation that enters into all individual formation and education? (Kemp, 2006, 183). The question is not whether education should acknowledge imitation as a tool for teaching and learning but rather how mimesis should be integrated into the pedagogical context.
The teacher is the representative of the historical community. The teacher, highly?critical or not, is the intermediary of traditions, for even critiques must be based on premises and conceptions of man in order to be sound. Consequently, the teacher has something to offer the student, something to be imitated; the teacher cannot merely be the occasion that spurs the student to bring out truths hidden inside. The best teacher is the one who can make his or her student autonomous. Mimesis must be a creative imitation, and that naturally can only happen if the student appreciates the teacher?even when considering a particular teacher as the best teacher for him or herself. The teacher forms the student, but the student forms him or herself through the choice of teacher he or she wants to follow as the master. (Kemp, 2006, 183)
Creative mimesis is the term used to reframe imitation within pedagogy. There is an expectation that the student (apprentice) will imitate the actions and behaviours of the master and ultimately move just beyond the skill and creativity of the master. If mimetic representation is conscious, if it is distinguishable, something can be done with it. What needs attention is not a resolving or diminishing, but an acknowledging and embodying.
