Chelsea, United spared as City get fiendish Champions League draw

Fate largely smiled on Manchester United and holders Chelsea in Thursday's Champions League draw, but Manchester City found themselves drawn into a daunting group with Real Madrid, Ajax and Borussia Dortmund.

Chelsea, who beat Bayern Munich on penalties in last season's final to claim the trophy for the first time, were drawn in Group E alongside Italian champions Juventus, Shakhtar Donetsk, and Danish debutants Nordsjaelland.

Juventus will be appearing in the Champions League for the first time since the 2009-10 season and are likely to present the strongest challenge to Roberto di Matteo's side.

United found themselves in similarly benign surroundings in Group H, having been pitted against Portugal's SC Braga, Galatasaray of Turkey and Romanians CFR-Cluj in the draw in Monaco.

However, manager Sir Alex Ferguson did not need reminding that it was from a similarly straightforward group -- containing Benfica, FC Basel and Cluj's domestic rivals Otelul Gelati -- that the three-time champions failed to progress last season.

"We have the experience of playing against Galatasaray in the past and we will always remember the 'Welcome to Hell' banners," Ferguson told manutd.com.

"Obviously, we've never played Cluj before but, after the experience of last year, we don't want to make any stupid errors this time. We will play our strongest team to make sure we get through."

United, beaten 3-1 by Barcelona in the 2011 final, are appearing in the group phase for a record 18th time.

As in 2011, this season's final will also take place at London's Wembley Stadium, to mark the 150th anniversary of the English Football Association.

City's pool, Group D, unites the reigning champions of England, Spain, Germany and the Netherlands, with the Manchester club the only team never to have won the Champions League.

Roberto Mancini's side were drawn in a similarly taxing group last season and failed to reach the knockout phase, with Bayern Munich and Napoli finishing above them on their first appearance in the Champions League.

City defender Joleon Lescott refused to be discouraged by the draw, tweeting: "Group D highlights the fact why it's called Champions league. #TitleWinnersOnly"

Along with Spain, England are one of only two countries with four teams in the group phase and their fourth representatives, Arsenal, will face Schalke, Olympiacos and debutants Montpellier, the French champions, in Group B.

There was one other newcomer in the draw in the shape of Malaga, who qualified by overcoming Panathinaikos in the play-off round earlier this week.

The Spanish side were drawn in Group C with Zenit Saint Petersburg, Anderlecht and seven-time champions AC Milan, who will have been relieved to avoid a more difficult group after a summer in which they lost a glut of leading players.

Barcelona, finalists in two of the last four seasons, landed in Group G, where they will have fellow former champions Benfica and Celtic for company, as well as Spartak Moscow.

Big-spending Paris Saint-Germain, meanwhile, will fancy their chances of qualifying from a group that also includes FC Porto, Dynamo Kiev and Dinamo Zagreb

Last season's beaten finalists Bayern Munich were placed in Group F alongside Valencia, they team they beat on penalties in the 2001 final, as well as Lille of France and Belarusian outfit BATE Borisov.

"The group is manageable for us, at least on paper," said Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes.

"But the Champions League is always a difficult challenge and every opponent has to be respected. We are looking forward to the first game."

The opening batch of group matches is scheduled for September 18-19.

Sony's VPL-HW50ES projector revealed at IFA, brings home 4K and 3D in October

Sony's VPLHW50ES projector revealed at IFA, brings home 4K and 3D in October

Look, we loved Sony's VPL-VW1000ES when it brought home 4K capability last year, but since we don't have the $20k+ laying around to spend on one, we're especially excited to hear about the just revealed VPL-HWH50ES. Slotting in above the VPL-HW30ES, it uses a version of the same technology seen in the VW1000ES to process images for 4K and of course supports 3D as well. We're all very familiar with the company's SXRD projectors by now but if you need more information the press release is after the break. While we know these are due to ship across Europe in both black and white by the end of October, what you won't find, at least so far, is a price tag. We'll keep our eyes peeled at CEDIA next week for more information.

Increasing Revenues With Internet Marketing | Social Media ...

August 29th, 2012 // 11:11 am @ Jeff Cartright

Many definitions are being suggested and offered by gurus and experts about internet marketing. This marketing option has proven its worth to many companies and given them more dramatic increase in their sales. In spite of this, some businesses are still hesitant to invest in hiring people or internet marketing firms thinking that they are not going to give them that needed boost in their business revenue. By now, people should no longer be more concerned about how to define internet marketing but should already be formulating strategies that will work for them.

Internet users are increasing in number each day. These people are the reasons why many companies are taking advantage of internet marketing. Instead of going to physical shops, more people would rather go online and look for the things they need. In order to attract more online users, business owners are building stronger online presence by creating many credible accounts, manage blogs and be active in social networking sites where many people are found these days.

Ecommerce is offering vast opportunities for business owners and use effective strategies to give them better edge against the competitors in their industry. But even with the many strategies and methods people can execute to improve their business online, it is important that they know how they are done properly and in a timely manner. Careful study of the strategies is necessary because, instead of giving you the advantage, these strategies can backfire and be bad for your business.

But people who are thinking of having their own business but are just putting off the idea because of the lack of funds can use internet marketing. Small businesses can start by just setting up online stores or ecommerce websites to generate income. Anyone can have the tools and strategies to use in order to be successful as long as they know how to use them.

So if your company wants to be successful, never doubt the importance of internet marketing. Many companies have already realized how vital these internet marketing strategies are to increase their revenue. You must do the right thing; plan and invest on internet marketing and see how your business goals come into reality.

Gold or Silver? - Investing.co.uk

Many investors looking at precious metals as a diversifying or speculative investment will think about investing in either gold or silver. Certainly there reasons for purchasing both, and an exposure to gold and silver can be achieved in much the same way: directly through the purchase of bullion products or coins, or through investment into ETFs, shares of mining companies, or futures and options.

For an investor who wishes to hold physical gold, there are considerations over storage, and perhaps whether to hold gold in allocated or unallocated accounts. There is a lot to think about before buying gold, and perhaps included should be a comparison to silver. The final decision as to whether to invest in gold or silver may be dictated by the economic cycle as much as the individual qualities of the two metals.

Qualities compared

Gold is a dense metal with a high lustre and attractive yellow colour. It is a bright metal, which has a high durability ? it does not tarnish ? and is very malleable. It is found in its pure form on and below the earth?s crust. It is also an efficient electrical conductor.

Like gold, silver has a lustrous quality, though it is white in colour. Silver is a ductile metal, malleable like gold, though silver does tarnish over time. It is one of the best electrical conductors known to man. Silver is most commonly found in nature as an alloy with other metals such as copper.

Uses of Gold and Silver

Jewellery

The first use of both metals that comes to mind is as jewellery. Both are decorative metals, and have been used throughout history in the manufacture of rings, earrings, bracelets, chains, etc. However, even though both metals have a high durability, and are malleable ? perfect for forming intricate items of jewellery ? gold is alloyed with other metals, such as silver and copper, when used for jewellery to increase its hardness. Silver jewellery tends to have a higher concentration of silver in its alloys.

Financial

Both metals have been used as a form of currency, and then in the minting of coins for standardised transactions in global trade. The Mesopotamians produced silver and gold coins as early as around 700 BC, and both metals were used in the minting of coinage until the 20th century. Even now, some coins will be produced in pure silver and pure gold, though these are for investment purposes rather than as circulated currency.

With the higher value of gold, coins intended for the purchase of goods and services ceased to be made of the yellow metal a long time before silver content was cut.

However, both gold and silver, because of their values as precious metals, can be used as a currency substitute, and the use of such ?digital gold or silver? is becoming more popular.

Medicinal

Both gold and silver are used in dentistry and medicine.

Gold is used for a variety of treatments such as rheumatoid arthritis, and is used in the treatment of some cancers and neurological disorders. It also helps to control addictions to caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol.

Silver is used in the production of antiseptics, and treatments for dermatological diseases. It is used in dressings for external wounds, as well as in treatments for pneumonia, some cancers, HIV/ AIDS, and herpes.

Industrial

Gold is an efficient conductor and is used as electrical conductors and connectors, particularly where small parts are required such as in cell phones, gps equipment, calculators, and televisions. It is also used in large amounts in the aerospace industry, where its qualities as both a conductor and reflector are important in the manufacture of components and casings for air and space travel and exploration.

Silver is used in many industries. Its uses include electrical equipment, hi-fi, batteries, photographic applications, electrical connectors and conductors, nuclear reactors, computers and other equipment that requires small conductive parts. In fact, because of its wide ranging uses in the manufacture of goods, silver is sometimes looked upon as an industrial metal rather than a precious metal.

World Production

In 2011, global gold production reached 2700 tonnes. According to the World Gold Council, the world?s top producer was China, at 355 tonnes, with Australia?s 270 tonnes putting it in second place. The USA was the world?s third largest producer at 237 tonnes.

Silver production outstripped gold by 10:1. At 23689 tonnes, world silver production boomed in 2011 as the economies of \China and India pulled in silver for use in its growing industrial sectors. The world?s largest silver producer in 2011 was Mexico, at 153 million ounces, with China lagging in third position at 104 million ounces.

So what does all this mean?

Both gold and silver are used more extensively than many people realise. Silver is accepted as a mainstay in the sectors of financial and jewellery use, especially because it is seen as a cheap alternative to gold. Gold and silver are also commonly used for awards, cups, medals, and trophies.

However, gold has a tradition as a currency metal that is unrivalled. Its production is lower than that of silver, and it value per ounce far higher. Historically the ratio between the price of gold and silver is around 15:1. This ratio fluctuates, and understanding why may lead to better timing of investment decisions.

As a metal used in industry, silver wins hands down. Both silver and gold are seen as investments to hedge against inflation and as a store of wealth, though gold tends to outperform silver when economies falter and political climates erupt. When industrial production increases, and economies are growing, the growth in the demand for silver tends to outstrip that of gold.

Cartoon - A Medium That Uses Pictures to Give Messages

You can find cartoons most anywhere, but most often nowadays, you will find them in newspapers. There are many reasons why cartoonists make these kinds of drawings. Typically, these drawings that you find in the newspaper are used for either humor or satire. In the beginning, cartoons were drawn because that was the main technique that people used. However, the techniques of drawing have gotten better, and cartoons are now drawn to get certain points across.

The word cartoon was derived from the Italian word cartone and the Dutch word karton. These both described a kind of heavy, strong board. People believe that these words were used to describe the boards and walls that these sketches were made on. In order for someone to draw a cartoon on a wall, they had to take many days in order to complete the picture. However, once they began using hard paperboards, the drawing of cartoons became much easier.

The kinds of modern cartoons that we see today began in the year of 1843. These satirical drawings were found in "Punch," which was a British magazine. These drawings evolved from that time in order to become the cartoons that we see today. In most cases, a cartoon involves a picture, and a caption underneath the drawing that describes the situation. The text that is involved in a cartoon can also be placed in what is known as a speech bubble. This is a blank space that has an arrow pointing towards the character that is saying the text. Most of the cartoons that you see in newspapers are drawn in order to get humor across to the reader.

There are many cartoons that are printed on a regular basis in magazines and in newspapers; however, some of these cartoons have become extremely popular. Some of the cartoons have been drawn in newspapers for decades. Sometimes, these cartoons are collected together and put into a book format. There are many books that have been published that are made up of cartoons. There are even storybooks that have been written for children that include a number of cartoons. These kinds of pictures are wonderful for holding a young child's attention as they learn how to read.

One of the newest ways that cartoons are used is in animation. If you turn on your television, chances are high that you have seen a cartoon. This is a show that has been made up of the drawings that have been drawn by cartoonists. The cartoonist has to draw each movement of the character in a cartoon separately, and this produces the effect of the characters moving on film.

Cartoons are a good medium to carry a message to masses. They are important components of newspapers and magazines. Cartoon films are a good medium for entertainment. Please visit my site here to get the cartoon photos.

Lenovo's K860 phablet gets priced in China 2,188 yuan on August 28th

Lenovo's K860 has been making the rounds for a while now. That five-incher's specs are hardly a secret. But, what has continued to evade us was a price and release date for this quad-core Exynos-powered beast. Thankfully, the Chinese manufacturer has finally come clean and we are happy to tell you the phablet will be hitting shelves tomorrow, August 28th, for 2,188 yuan (about $344). The initial run of this heavily skinned ICS handset will be fairly limited unfortunately -- only 2,000 will be released on the first day. But, we're sure a wider release can't be far behind.

AP Exclusive: Energy loan watchdog an Obama donor

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A veteran Wall Street executive who performed an independent review that exonerated the Obama administration's program of loans to energy companies contributed $52,500 to re-elect President Barack Obama in the months since completing his work, according to an Associated Press review of campaign records. The executive defended the integrity of his conclusions and said he decided to donate to Obama after his work was finished.

The campaign contributions to Obama started just weeks after Herbert M. Allison Jr., in congressional testimony in March, minimized concerns that the Energy Department was at high risk in more than $23 billion in federal loans awarded to green energy firms. Two weeks later, Allison began giving to the Obama campaign. His contributions to Obama and the Democratic National Committee totaled $52,500 by last month. Allison previously was the former head of the government's mass purchase of toxic Wall Street assets.

Allison did not make any Obama donations during his four-month review of Energy Department loans, and he has a long history of working with and giving money to both political parties. However, Republican Party officials and congressional critics of the energy loans said Allison's donations to Obama raise doubts about his objectivity and highlight his decision not to assess multimillion-dollar loans to two companies that later went into bankruptcy ? the troubled Solyndra solar panel company and Beacon Power, an energy storage firm.

Allison's report, completed in February and touted by the White House, acknowledged that the Energy Department could lose as much as $3 billion in loans, but it concluded that was far less than the $10 billion set aside by Congress for high-risk companies. The review did not assess the two bankrupt firms because those loans were no longer current. Allison told Congress that "DOE has negotiated protections in the loan agreements that enable it to cut off further funding and to demand more credit protection if projects do not meet targets." He also urged the Energy Department to toughen its oversight.

Allison defended the integrity of his review in an interview with The Associated Press. He said that he did not make the decision to back a presidential candidate until after he had finished his work and that his selection was approved by Energy Department lawyers before he began his review last October to "ensure there was no hint of bias or conflict of interest."

"I was on the record with the White House that this had to be completely independent review and they agreed," he said Wednesday in a telephone interview from his home in Westport, Conn. "It didn't hew to anybody's political suasion, I think, and it had to be fully factual or it wouldn't be credible."

Allison said he made his decision to support Obama after he saw "his administration in action and decided that I believe broadly in the things he's trying to accomplish."

Allison gave $2,500 to the Obama campaign on March 29, two weeks after he testified to the Senate Energy and Commerce Committee about his review. In May, he gave $15,000 to the Obama Victory Fund, a joint fundraising committee that supports both the president's re-election campaign and the Democratic National Committee. Allison gave the same amount to the fund again in June and then $20,000 more in July.

Allison has donated money to both parties, but his gifts in the past have tended to be much smaller than his current contributions, typically no more than $1,000 or $2,000, according to Federal Election Commission records. Allison explained his larger donations to the Obama campaign by saying "there's a hell of a lot more money in politics today than in years past and I decided I could go this route."

Allison has given to GOP figures such as Rep. Peter King of New York and Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, and to Democrats such as Rep. Carolyn Maloney of New York and former Nebraska Sen. Bob Kerrey. Allison's presidential preferences have been mostly Republicans ? Sen. John McCain of Arizona and former Sen. Bob Dole of Kansas. He also gave $2,300 to Obama in 2008, a year before Obama appointed Allison as an assistant treasury secretary.

The White House and the Obama campaign defended Allison, saying his donations did not taint his work as independent reviewer of the loans program. They pointed to his repeated hiring over the past two decades by Republican presidential administrations and GOP campaigns as justification that Allison had the independence to oversee troubled government programs.

"Mr. Allison was selected to do this study because of his relevant expertise and he is a public servant widely respected by Democrats and Republicans alike," said Eric Schultz, a White House spokesman. Schultz added that Allison's "analysis of the DOE loan portfolio was thorough and reliable as evident by additional independent reports affirming his findings." The Obama campaign said, "Having completed an independent assignment does not cost him his right to continue participating in the political progress on behalf of many candidates, as he has in the past."

A former Merrill Lynch executive, Allison worked for several Republican administrations and earned a reputation for tackling troubled federal programs. During McCain's failed 2000 presidential run, he served as national finance chairman and was rumored to be McCain's choice to become treasury secretary if he had won.

Allison was named by President George W. Bush to head Fannie Mae after the quasi-government home lending agency was placed in conservatorship in 2008 following the Wall Street collapse. A year later, Obama named Allison as an assistant treasury secretary to oversee the Troubled Asset Relief Program that Bush had created to stabilize Wall Street banks and investment houses reeling with toxic debt.

During his work at the Treasury Department, Allison was among top officials who crossed swords with TARP Inspector General Neil Barofsky, who accused the department of failing to properly track government bailout money given to banks and investment houses. Barofsky declined to comment about his dealings with Allison.

Allison left the Treasury Department in 2010 but returned last year to head up the review of energy loans. The White House agreed to the review in the wake of mounting Republican criticism after Solyndra, a California firm, went belly up. The bankruptcy cost U.S. taxpayers $528 million in lost loans.

Rep. Cliff Stearns, R-Fla., who chairs the House Energy Committee's oversight subcommittee, said Allison's donations to the Obama campaign back up GOP warnings this year that the White House review was suspect. Stearns said Allison's "financial support for the Obama campaign undermines (his) credibility and shows once again that the president did not want a careful, independent review of his risky green jobs scheme."

Allison's role as a large Obama donor "raises serious questions about an administration that puts campaign cash before taxpayer money," said Joe Pounder, a spokesman for the Republican National Committee.

Allison declined to say whether he will keep donating to Obama. "Next time around," he said, "I might support a Republican."

Data mining the classics makes for beautiful science

12 hrs.

Statistics and data mining aren't typically associated with literary analysis, but new research suggests that such objective methods may be both powerful and relevant. Not everyone is impressed, including scholars who don't care to be replaced by supercomputers.

Matthew Jockers, assistant professor of English at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, has devised a method of comparing thousands of books to one another in order to find systems of influence, schools of thought?and other groupings that may not be obvious to literary theorists. He calls it macroanalysis.

"We need to?go beyond our traditional practice of close reading and go out to a different scale," Jockers told NBC News. "The traditional practice of close reading allows us to look at the bark on the trees, while the macroanalytic allows us to see the whole forest." Modern programming and data mining tools, combined with widely available digital texts, make this approach possible.

His system processed thousands of digital books from the 19th- and late 18th centuries ? a period?chosen because the works are free, plentiful and subject to a wealth of theory already. The books are examined on dozens of measures, from word choice to punctuation to overarching theme. The end result is a unique "book signal" that allows it to be compared to other books and eventually plotted in a sort of similarity space, where closely related books are near one another, and differing books are distant.

It makes for a striking graphical representation:

But it's not just about making a pretty picture. By looking at how books are distributed based on certain metrics, there are many trends and facts to be gleaned.

Some aren't particularly surprising, like the fact that Jane Austen and Sir Walter Scott are rated very highly for originality and influence.?But less obvious things emerge as well. Jockers' systematic approach helped illuminate the reasons for a decline in the visibility of Irish-American authors early in the 20th century, closing?a gap in knowledge that had been speculated about for years (for those interested, it turns out they temporarily changed the seat of their literary voice to more rural, western climes, away from the urban, eastern areas with which they are traditionally associated).

And other powerful patterns emerge: female authors, for instance, were grouped closely at one end of the book space, even though their gender was not part of how they were placed. You can see it in the rendering below;?the darker-colored areas represent groups of women authors. So female authorship?is indeed detectable, not just by well-honed human intuition but by objective measures.

Other themes and measures can also be shown to group or separate themselves, so certain styles, eras?and so on can be described not just anecdotally, but systematically, using nothing but the text as data.

Naturally, there are objections. Jockers is aware of them: "One of the?criticisms is that it succeeds in refinding what we already knew." In other words, why bother proving statistically what we already know from close reading?

But other sciences have different methods for obtaining the same result, such as measuring the diameter of the Earth or the pH of an acid. Why shouldn't literary theory have the same thing? "These are not competing methodologies, but complementary ones," explained Jockers. For instance, while the approach showed definite clustering of female authors, an interesting finding, this level of organization fails to show that many of the best-known works by women were in fact not in that group. Pointing that out and examining why it is so are jobs best done by humans. So as the high-level approach?presents a new perspective, it?may prompt new work in more?traditional fields as well.

Macroanalysis could be applied to modern literature as well, and of course other languages, but it's not just a box where you put in books and out comes theory. It takes critical thought to dissect the results and apply them to existing thought. But it's not hard to imagine new books coming out with a computer-determined thematic and stylistic analysis printed on the dust cover.

The work was presented as a paper and talk in Hamburg, but in its final form it will be the final chapter of a book Jockers is working on called "Macroanalysis: Digital Methods and Literary History," due to be published soon by University of Illinois Press. He's?trying not to make it too dry: "I want this to appeal to my literary?colleagues who aren't programmers. It's not laden with theoretical jargon."?Curious statisticians and literary theorists alike?should find it an interesting read.

Porn Shutdown: Syphilis Cases Spark Self-Imposed Moratorium On Production

By Alex Dobuzinskis
LOS ANGELES, Aug 21 (Reuters) - A porn industry trade group has announced a U.S. moratorium on production of adult sex films after several reported cases of syphilis among adult film actors, adding to the pressure on porn producers to require the use of condoms on sets.
The actors can return to work in 10 days after taking antibiotics, and doctors have recommended treating all adult film actors as a precaution, the Los Angeles-based Free Speech Coalition said in a statement on its website late on Monday.
It added that filming had been halted since the weekend.
"Clearly our industry's priority is the health and well-being of our performers," Diane Duke, the executive director of the Free Speech Coalition, said in the statement.
Porn producers in the Los Angeles area -- the heart of the U.S. adult film industry and home to an estimated 1,000 performers -- are under pressure to ensure condom use on sets to prevent the spread of the AIDS virus and other sexually transmitted diseases.
Existing California workplace laws already mandate the use of condoms by porn performers, but critics say that statute is not specifically aimed at the industry and is widely flouted.
A Los Angeles ballot initiative in November will ask voters to force the county health department to require condom use by adult film performers.
Dr. Jonathan Fielding, the director of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, said his agency was investigating less than a dozen reported cases of syphilis involving the adult film industry.
All the cases so far involved adult film performers or their partners, Fielding said.
"It's not surprising that there would be a lot of cases in the adult film industry, since they are having a lot of unprotected sex and often with multiple partners," he said.
The AIDS Healthcare Foundation, which has led a campaign to involve local officials in regulating the use of condoms in the adult film industry, was critical of the porn industry decision to have all its performers receive antibiotic treatment, rather than take the time to trace the outbreak.
"They just want to throw an antibiotic blanket over the whole thing," AIDS Healthcare President Michael Weinstein said.
His nonprofit succeeded in January in persuading Los Angeles city officials to adopt a condom requirement for porn performers. The city is still determining how to enforce the policy, but it will not cover studio sound stages.

BALLOT INITIATIVE
A ballot initiative due in November that AIDS Healthcare supports would go further and require county health officials to impose requirements for condoms on porn sets that would apply to shoots in studio sound stages.
The Free Speech Coalition said the syphilis test that porn industry doctors were administering could not diagnose a recent infection because the test has a 90-day window.
Joanne Cachapero, a spokeswoman for the Free Speech Coalition, said her group "would rather err on the side of caution" and ensure "as many performers as possible receive testing and treatment."

Utah tops U.S. in giving to charity, study says | The Salt Lake Tribune

In this Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009 photo, John Alves, of Dartmouth, Mass., uses a basket while taking collection during Mass at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church in New Bedford, Mass. A study on the generosity of Americans, released Monday, Aug. 20, 2012, by the Chronicle of Philanthropy, found that states with populations that are less religious are also the stingiest about giving money to charity. (AP Photo/Gretchen Ertl)

Utah tops U.S. in giving to charity, study says

Philanthropy ? Less-religious states give less, study shows.

Boston ? Mormon-dominated Utah leads the nation in charitable giving, thanks largely to LDS emphasis on tithing.

In fact, a new study on the generosity of Americans suggests that states with the least-religious residents are also the stingiest about donating to charity.

?

Among other findings:

? People who earn $200,000 per year give a greater percentage to charity when they live in ZIP codes with fewer people who are as wealthy as they are.

? People who earn between $50,000 and $75,000 annually give a higher percentage of their income to charity (7.6 percent) than those who make $100,000 or more (4.2 percent).

The study released Monday by the Chronicle of Philanthropy found that residents in states where religious participation is higher than the rest of the nation gave the greatest percentage of their discretionary income to charity.

A Gallup poll earlier this year ranked Utah as the second-most-religious state, behind Mississippi, and a religion census pegged the Salt Lake City area ? headquarters of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints ? as the nation?s most-religious metropolis.

Mormons are taught to pay 10 percent of their income to the faith. To enter LDS temples and participate in Mormonism?s most sacred rites, members must meet this tithing requirement.

"Any LDS member who is faithful does that," said Valerie Mason, 70, of Mesa, Ariz., during an interview in Salt Lake City. "Some struggle with it. Some leave the church because of it. But we believe in the blessing. ... Tithing does bring the blessing of God?s promise."

The most generous state, according to the latest study, was Utah, where residents gave 10.6 percent of their discretionary income to charity, followed by Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee and South Carolina.

The least generous was New Hampshire, at 2.5 percent, followed by Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

Churches are among the organizations counted as charities by the study, and some states in the Northeast rank in the top 10 when religious giving is not counted.

The study also found that patterns of charitable giving are colored in political reds and blues.

story continues below

Of the 10 least generous states, nine voted for Democrat Barack Obama for president in the last election. By contrast, of the 10 most generous states, eight voted for Republican John McCain.

But Peter Panepento, the Chronicle?s assistant managing editor, said that political breakdown likely speaks to a state?s religious makeup, not its prevailing political views. He noted the lowest-ranked Democrat states were also among the least religious, while the top-ranked Republican states were among the more religious.

"I don?t know if I could go out and say it?s a complete Republican-Democrat difference as much as it is different religious attitudes and culture in these states," he said.

The study was based on Internal Revenue Service records of people who itemized deductions in 2008, the most recent year statistics were available.

By focusing on the percentage given to charity from discretionary income ? the money left over after necessities are paid for ? the study aimed to remove variables such as the differing costs of living around the country, Panepento said. The data allowed researchers to detail charitable giving down to the ZIP code.

In Boston, semi-retired carpenter Stephen Cremins said the traditional New England ideal of self-sufficiency might explain the lower giving, particularly during tight times when people have less to spare.

"Charity begins at home," Cremins said. "I?m a big believer of that, you know, you have to take care of yourself before you can help others."

Overhead Garage Storage Cabinets

While cabinets are a smart idea for garage storage shelves, they are doing involve some drawbacks. What things can one does include them as employment in your garage? What are the best solutions available?Cabinets are perfect at a garage. They've created the garage look cleaner and neater if you can hide all your things with them. They're able to help organize your things more readily and you are obviously ready to separate items that truly stored together.

And listed below are the steps to reusing your old cabinets as garage storage cabinets:1st Step- When the cabinets have already been aloof from region, you ought to put them to use the way would really like so that they can view in the garage. Make sure you study the cabinets and draw lines for where are going to hanging.2nd Step- Degree of is going to be installing the garage storage cabinets. Mark while the studs have been in the wall of course, if your walls are constructed from poured concrete, you will subsequently be drilling 1x4 nailer strips into them. If you would like, you'll be able to paint the walls white that allows you to reflect more light for your garage.

You also have to think about that you are currently going to need to open those cabinet doors. Measure the dimensions of the cabinet doors are assure that you'll be equipped to open them with the space you are intending to place them in your garage. You will even try generating a mock cabinet beyond cardboard that allows you to clearly tell if the cupboards you are looking for will match your space.

A perceived setback which will get the garage organized is the fact that getting a custom garage storage product is very costly for any budget of many homeowner. Although a Garage Storage Cabinet can turn into a vital investment, the return from getting an organized garage is generally rather crucial as well. Just consider the many things that have already been lost in the spare room due to its clutter. Frequently an innumerable selection of resources are obtained finding or replacing things. A brand new group of garage cabinets for storing many of these items stop the losses that will well be sustained as a result of the clutter.

In order to organize your garage, carefully consider the needs you have. When you have loads of small trinkets, be sure to have storage cabinets handy. They're just excellent for stuffing small things in, provided you label a cabinet. You will probably want some shelving units, to be able to place larger things built in. The goal is to become quite as much of the junk up and running and onto any storage medium like garage storage cabinets and shelves.

The very best option if making prefabricated garage shelving is metal shelves. Plastic-type shelves could possibly be sufficient for keeping not very heavy things however in time you need a little something alot more resilient to get keeping weightier objects. 1 issue with the metal shelves is they are unable to be slashed to length therefore they also have typical widths, depths along with height. You will need to select some thing which suits your personal available area.

Binge-drinking students happier and more accepted than others: study

A study released on Aug. 20, 2012, suggests binge drinking has social benefits for college-age students. (Jean-Pierre??

Researchers completing a new study on alcohol consumption have discovered that college-age students who binge drink are happier than those who don't.

Those who engaged in binge drinking tend to belong to so-called high-status groups: wealthy, white, male and active in fraternity life. And those who did not belong to the high-status groups could achieve similar levels of social acceptance through the act of binge drinking. In fact, the study results suggest that students engaged in the heavy drinking practice to elevate their social status amongst peers rather than to alleviate depression or anxiety.

"The present study offers another insight into the nature of a seemingly intractable social problem," the study released on Monday reads. "It is our hope that by drawing attention to the important social motivations underlying binge drinking, institutional administrators and public health professionals will be able to design and implement programs for students that take into account the full range of reasons that students binge drink."

The Washington Post reports that the study's co-author and Colgate University associate professor Carolyn Hsu presented some of the findings during the American Sociological Association gathering in Denver last week.

Interestingly, the study results compiled from surveying 1,600 college students also continues to support past evidence suggesting that binge drinking leads to a number of problems affecting the mind and body, including alcoholism, violence, poor grades and risky sexual behavior.

"I would guess it has to do with feeling like you belong and whether or not you're doing what a 'real' college student does," Hsu told LiveScience. "It seems to be more about certain groups getting to define what that looks like."

Binge drinking was defined as consuming more than four drinks in one occasion for women and more than five drinks for men. Sixty-four percent of respondents said they had engaged in the practice, compared with 36 percent who said they had not.

Those statistics differ from similar evidence gathered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC's statistics measure binge drinking in the same quantity but limit the consumption period to two hours or fewer. Its results also found that the majority of binge drinkers (70 percent) were over the age of 26. The CDC has also found that 90 percent of alcohol consumed by people under the age of 21 is done in the form of binge drinking, compared with 75 percent among all U.S. adults.

Ryan makes personal appeal to Florida seniors on Medicare

Paul Ryanand his mother Betty Ryan Douglas (Gerardo Mora/AP)

THE VILLAGES, Fla. -- Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan wrapped his first solo tour as Mitt Romney's running mate at the famous retirement community here Saturday, taking his message of Medicare reform to seniors in a crucial swing state.

Standing between two signs that read "Protect and Strengthen Medicare," Ryan made the most personal case for overhauling Medicare yet during his time on the campaign trail. With his mother, 78-year-old Betty Ryan Douglas, standing near him on the stage, Ryan discussed how the Medicare program has played a role in his own family's life.

"Like a lot of Americans, when I think of Medicare, it's not just a program. It's not just a bunch of numbers. It's what my mom relies on. It's what my grandma had," Ryan said. He told of how is grandmother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease and moved into his mother's home when he was in high school. "Medicare was there for our family, for my grandma, when we needed it then. And Medicare is there for my mom while she needs it now and we have to keep that guarantee."

Hundreds of seniors from the neighborhood came out in support of Ryan, while a few protestors stood on the outskirts holding signs? against against Ryan's Medicare plan. A small plane flew over the rally? carrying a banner reading, "Paul Ryan: Keep Your Hands Off My Medicare!"

The future of the federal program has become a focal point of the presidential campaign since Romney chose Ryan as his running mate last weekend. As House Budget Committee Chairman, Ryan proposed a plan to overhaul the Medicare health care program for those currently under the age of 55 that would offer what Republicans call "premium support," a system in which the federal government provides subsidies to seniors to purchase health care from private insurers. The new structure, Republicans say, would reduce the rapidly ballooning cost of the popular program. Democrats counter that the plan, which passed in the Republican-led House but failed in the Democrat-controlled Senate, would increase health care costs for seniors. With the Ryan pick, Democrats see an opportunity to use the plan against him to win the state heavy with seniors.

During his battleground state tour this week, Ryan has addressed Medicare a handful of times, but never at such lengths at a public event. Ryan, whose premium support plan would be optional and does not apply to current retirees, argued that the changes made to the payment structure of Medicare under President Obama's 2010 health care law would restrict choices for seniors currently in the system. In the health care law, Obama planned to use the savings from restructuring part of Medicare to pay for the new law.

"Medicare should not be used as a piggy bank for Obamacare," Ryan said. "Medicare should be the promise that it made to our current seniors period end of story."

Without referring to it by name, Ryan pointed to the Independent Patient Advisory Board, a 15-member federal agency established under Obama's health care law to reign in health care costs, leading conservatives to argue that it would encourage rationing. Just as with Medicare, Ryan made his opposition to the proposal a personal case.

"We will make sure this board of bureaucrats will not mess with my mom's health care or your mom's health care," he said.

A spokesman from the Obama's campaign responded Saturday, alleging that "a detailed debate" over Medicare reform would be "suicidal" for the Republican ticket.

"Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan know a detailed debate about their Medicare voucher plan is politically 'suicidal' so they're not telling the truth about its impact on current seniors. Congressman Ryan didn't tell seniors in Florida today that if he had his way, seniors would face higher Medicare premiums and prescription drug costs, and would be forced to pay out of pocket for preventive care," said campaign spokesman Danny Kanner in a statement. "He didn't say that they'd turn Medicare into a voucher system, ending the Medicare guarantee and raising costs by $6,400 a year for seniors.? And he certainly didn't say that they'd do it all to pay for tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires. But those are the facts, and the 'substantive' debate he claims they want requires Romney and Ryan to be honest about them."

The decision to send Ryan to a retirement community in Florida to defend his plan suggests that Medicare will likely remain a major part of the campaign debate, one that both Republicans and Democrats appear confident they can win.

This article has been updated to include a response from President Obama's presidential campaign spokesman.
