Jose Aldo is even tougher than first suspected

Jose Aldo defended his featherweight belt with a broken foot, already making him tougher than the average man. Now, a report out of Brazil shows how ridiculously tough the man is. Aldo also had kidney stones.

He checked into a hospital in Rio de Janeiro this week to deal with the kidney stones, a problem he has had before. The Mayo Clinic says kidney stones bring with them severe pain in the abdomen. Even if the stones were just starting to become a problem on Saturday, it's a whole lot to deal with while also fighting Chan Sung Jung with a broken foot.

Brian Gregan misses out on medal at World University Games

Brian Gregan fell disappointingly short of the gold medal he so strongly targeted at the World University Games in Kazan, finishing fifth in the 400 metres final in what proved to be an ultra competitive race.

The DCU student was the fastest qualifier for the final, but lacked his usual power coming into the homestretch, Russia?s Vladimir Krasnov finishing fastest of the lot in lane eight to claim the home victory in a season best of 45.49 seconds.

That left Krasnov just .01 ahead of Brazil?s Adreson Henriques, yet Gregan was never even in a medal winning position, taking fifth in 45.83 ? down on his season best of 45.53, and in fact equalling his fifth place finish of two years ago. Earlier, Jessie Barr finished sixth in the final of the 400m hurdles, clocking 57.65, also someway outside her best, as the gold medal went to Anna Titimets of Ukraine in an excellent 54.64.

Over a Barrel, Caribbean Seeks Finance for Clean Energy ? Global ...

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, Jul 08 (IPS) - When James Husbands, a 24-year-old Barbadian businessman, began weighing the possibility of manufacturing solar water heaters, there was already a prototype on the island that had been designed and installed by an Anglican priest living there in the early 1970s.

solarpanelkids640

A market study on the viability of producing solar water heaters had been done by a local NGO. This study, coupled with the Barbados government's imposition of import duties on the solar water heaters sold by an Australian company to the island, convinced James that the time was right to enter the field.3

Husbands, now managing director of Solar Dynamics, told the IPS that government support in the late 1970s was crucial to the success of his venture in the early days. Barbados currently has the fifth highest penetration worldwide of solar water heaters per thousand households.

Arnaldo Vieira de Carvalho, a specialist in the Energy Division of the Infrastructure and Environment Sector of the Inter-American Development Bank, told IPS that Latin America and the Caribbean use renewable energy (RE) in much greater proportion than any other region, although much of that is hydropower and biofuels. The use of wind and solar remain quite small.

IDB and its partners have sponsored a competition since 2009 for RE and Energy Efficiency projects in the Caribbean, the winners of which receive up to 100,000 dollars in financing and technical support. Eight winners were selected last year. The competition, IDEAS, has among its criteria that winners' projects should benefit the poor, gender equity, and indigenous communities.

An added incentive to accelerate the slow pace of RE development, even though the region is not a major source of fossil fuel emissions, is the spate of devastating natural disasters over the past decade.

Ulric Trotz, deputy director and science adviser of the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC), told IPS in an e-mail, "Extreme weather events (often associated with climate change) have caused significant damage to the region. For example, Hurricane Ivan in Grenada wiped out approximately 200 percent of her GDP in 2004. Similarly, a one in 100-year flood in Guyana in 2005 wiped out more than 60 percent of that country's GDP in that year, moving it from a positive growth position to a negative real growth."

Consequently, Caribbean governments have begun taking a more proactive approach to promoting the development of renewable energy, establishing an Energy Unit at the Caricom regional headquarters which works in conjunction with the CCCCC.

Trotz said promoting renewable energy is important, because "by diverting costs away from the importation of fossil fuels, countries will have additional resources from the savings to put towards building resilience to the impacts of Climate Change and Climate Vulnerability.

"It is not just the conversion to renewable energy but energy efficiency" that the region is focusing on, he said.

He added that "pooling RE projects across the region might have a catalytic effect of encouraging investment as this may significantly lower transaction costs and make investment more attractive."

The Caribbean, apart from Trinidad and Tobago, which is an oil producer, currently spends billions on the importation of fossil fuels every year. In May, while on a visit to Trinidad, U.S. Vice President Joe Biden made the point that energy costs in the region need to be lowered and the use of renewable energy increased.

"There's probably no group of nations better situated to take advantage of renewable energy possibilities than here in the Caribbean. And we know that many Caribbean nations pay three times more for energy than we do in the United States of America? are working together on this, looking to invest in connected regional grids to create economies of scale and renewable energy - economies of scale that are driven by renewable energy," he said.

The region has also sought the assistance of European Union partners, and launched the Caribbean Renewable Energy Development Programme with the major objective of strengthening the ability of Caribbean countries to mobilise investors to make the shift from conventional energy investment to renewable energy investment.

According to Thomas Scheutzlich, principal advisor of the Caribbean Renewable Energy Program (CREDP) since 2003, lack of an enabling legal policy framework and lack of well-defined bankable project proposals have been major barriers to the development of RE projects in the Caribbean region.

Scheutzlich has overall responsibility for implementation of the CREDP programme on behalf of the German consultancy company Projekt-Consult GmbH, which is charged by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) with the implementation of CREDP. Germany is responsible for 80 percent of CREDP's funding.

One problem is that many banks in the region are unsure of the economic soundness of RE ventures and are unable to judge the risks inherent in such new technology, Scheutzlich said. The lack of government guarantees also makes traditional banks reluctant to back such ventures.

However, regional and international banks such as the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the European Investment Bank, and the Caribbean Development Bank "are all looking for bankable energy projects and offer financing," he said.

Scheutzlich added that, "There is still a widespread and general lack of understanding of the potential of indigenous energy sources and energy efficiency throughout the society. Subsequently, governments cannot promote what they do not understand and utilities do not promote what they are not supplying themselves."

Utility companies in the region generally have universal monopoly over the generation, transmission, distribution, and sale of electricity. "This is their traditional business model and they will only divert from that model if it is economically attractive" for them to do so, he said.

But despite the slow pace in the Caribbean, during the last few years the energy landscape has been "positively changing with the change processes accelerating and gaining a certain dynamism, and this is exactly what CREDP wants to trigger."

President of Germany: we are interested in closer cooperation with Latvia

On July 8, during the meeting with Valdis Dombrovskis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, Joachim Gauck, President of Germany, confirmed that Germany is interested in closer economic cooperation with Latvia by seeking new opportunities for investment and trade, reported BC press secretary to the Prime Minister M?rti?? Panke.

Valdis Dombrovskis emphasised that targeted support to the production sector and exports has contributed to Latvia?s return on the development path becoming a country with the highest growth rate in Europe. The Government is committed to further work in order to enhance the investment and business environment, and improvements are also indicated by international surveys and business environment ratings.

?

The Prime Minister and the President of Germany shared the view that bilateral economic cooperation of Latvia and Germany still possesses some untapped potential; therefore businesses of both countries should further examine the respective opportunities. The President of Germany is accompanied by a delegation of German entrepreneurs who will meet representatives of Latvia?s companies during the Latvian-German Business Forum in order to discuss new trade opportunities and develop closer cooperation.

?

The Head of the Latvian Government acknowledged Germany?s initiative to undertake a leading role in fostering youth employment throughout Europe and expressed Latvia?s commitment to support the activities associated with this initiative. The Prime Minister stressed that the dual model of vocational education employed by Germany is an efficient instrument for developing cooperation of the education and production sectors, and that Latvia intends to build on this positive experience by reforming its vocational education.

?

Valdis Dombrovskis expressed gratitude to Germany for its support to Latvia?s intention to join the euro zone, as well as the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). The Prime Minister noted that both moves would strengthen Latvia?s competitiveness in international trade, contribute to attracting new investors in the production sector and create new jobs.

?

German President Joachim Gauck, continuing his visit to Latvia, visited Valmiera Primary School yesterday.

?

Gauck said he was delighted to become familiar with the culture of Latvia during the Song and Dance Festival, but the purposefulness of Latvians surprised him the most.

?

Gauck lauded Latvia's efforts to observe the European Union's demands and progress toward the introduction of the euro. Latvia's austerity measures most likely would not have been possible in Germany since Germans would not be as purposeful and complying, admitted the president. "You showed Europe that sacrifices can be made to achieve a great goal," said Gauck.

?

He also lauded the efforts of Latvian President Andris Berzins to popularize the German language in Latvia.

?

During Gauck's visit to Valmiera Primary School, Latvian Education and Science Minister Vjaceslavs Dombrovskis (Reform Party) and German Ambassador to Latvia Andrea Wiktorin signed a declaration of intent on cooperation in vocational education and training between the Latvian Education and Science Ministry and the German Education and Research Ministry.

'State of shock': 10 killed in Alaska seaplane crash

A small airplane crashed Sunday morning at an airport in Alaska, killing the pilot and nine passengers. A team from the NTSB is expected to arrive this afternoon to investigate. NBC's Mike Taibbi reports.

By Andrew Rafferty and Henry Austin, NBC News

Ten people were killed Sunday when their seaplane was ?engulfed in flames? at the Soldotna Airport in Alaska.

Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board were still trying to determine what caused the DHC-3T single propeller aircraft, owned by Rediske Air, to crash.

The pilot and co-owner of the company, Walter Rediske, 42, was described as ?highly experienced? by a spokesman.

?This is a real hard time for everyone,? said Andrew Harcombe, who also described himself as a family friend.

?Andrew was a highly experienced pilot and lifelong Alaskan. We are all in a state of shock.? ??

He added that the company will cooperate fully with investigators.

Investigators look at the remains of a fixed-wing aircraft that was engulfed in flames Sunday in Soldotna, Alaska.

The Soldotna Police Department said the accident took place around 11:20 a.m. (3:20 p.m. ET), and emergency responders arrived to find the aircraft engulfed in flames.?

?We saw the plume immediately when we left the station,? Capt. Lesley Quelland of Central Emergency Services, told the Anchorage Daily News, adding that the big black cloud was visible from the station at least three miles away.

Harcombe said the air charter company only flew in Alaska had been in business for more than 20-years, adding that the company flew to both airports and more remote locations in the state.?

Clint Johnson,?chief of the NTSB in Anchorage, told?NBC's Alaska affiliate?that everyone aboard the plane were killed after the it crashed, though it is unclear whether the accident happened during takeoff or landing.

Soldotna is south of Anchorage on the Kenai Peninsula.

App Store gives away popular iOS games and apps, likely to mark its 5th anniversary

Popular iOS apps and games discounted on the App Store, likely to mark 5th anniversary

Here's a little treat on a Monday morning. A number of premium iOS apps and games have been discounted to nothing over at the App Store, including the charming and mildly addictive Tiny Wings (and Tiny Wings HD for iPad), Traktor DJ (normally $20), Superbrothers: Sword and Sorcery EP, as well as Infinity Blade II (usually $7). There's no official promotion to explain or list all the discounts, so we're left to guess that this could be a prelude to July 10th, when Apple will mark the fifth anniversary of the App Store. Cupertino has already started sending out promotional material to mark the occasion, listing the usual big statistics to show how far the App Store has come since 2008, so these freebies could well be a part of that. We've linked up a few of them after the break, but the list isn't exhaustive so please add more in the Comments section if you spot any others that merit the storage space. Happy hunting!

Glenn Farrington Wants to Kickstart a Whole New Way of Writing ...

ComiXwriterLogoSloganOne of the most interesting comics-related projects currently on Kickstarter has to be Glenn Farrington and Steven Sashen?s ComiXwriter.

A new script software, Farrington had the idea to launch the first one that?s specifically tailored for comic books, as opposed to being a screenplay software with a comics template. It was, as you might expect if you?ve ever tried to find such a product, a project born out of frustration and the exasperation that such a product didn?t already exist in the marketplace.

You can check out the Kickstarter video below, and check out their site (they?ve raised over $12,000 on the way to a $35,000 goal) here.

Farrington, who is also working with First Comics on a number of upcoming projects, has worked as a comedian, screenwriter, software designer and more before making his first foray into graphic novels with the upcoming original hardcover Lives, which will debut at San Diego Comic Con International. He joined us to speak about ComiXwriter, and the process by which he decided that it needed to exist.

ComicBook.com: What made you decide to do it? It seems like something that ought to exist already?

Glenn Farrington: Right, and it seems like anything I come up with, that?s always the background thing. When I came up with the idea for Digital Seas, everyone?s like, ?You men there?s no way to do do Internet on a cruise ship? They?ve got everything else.? I was like, nope?and the whole time I was working on it I was like, ?someone?s gonna think of this someone?s gonna think of this?? and this is the same?this is frustration. I hate to say something was born out of frustration but really that?s what this became.

I sent an e-mail to Larry Young, actually, is how it all started, out of the clear blue saying I had an idea for a graphic novel. It was based on a screenplay of mine that had won a lot of awards but when my manager put it out there were two other plays in town that were kind of like it so it got bumped around. So I was like, ?This would make a great idea for a graphic novel,? and so I did all the research online. I?d never written?I mean, I?ve read comics my whole life but I?d never written any at that point. This was four years ago, maybe five at this point, and I had seen a quote by Larry Young on one of the comics websites when I was going through trying to figure out who I could send this to. I knew enough not to send it to the Big Two, that would be stupid, but I was very naive about the world, then, when it came to comics. I sent him an e-mail because it seemed like this was the type of story he wanted. He said ?Meet me at Comic-Con,? and I went down to Comic-Con and he said, ?Sure, let?s do it.?

So the first thing I did was look for software because I knew it had to be?you know, it was one of those things, it?s gotta be there. I?m a screenwriter for a living; I?ve got so many options that it?s crazy and I couldn?t find one. And I called a buddy of mine, Josh Gilbert, who?s another screenwriter and he said, ?You know there?s a template right in Final Draft, you can use that, it says ?Comic books.?? And I tried it and it was okay, it was fine but it was mor elike a screenplay format and it ddn?t really do a lot of the stuff that I wanted to do with comic books and the sample scripts I had gotten weren?t exactly like that. And it kind of sucks because I got used to that so now I kind of like that format but it?s still not what I wanted to have as the basic offering.

ComiXwriterCastVideoSo next thing I know, I kept bothering my wife that there should be soemthing and I?d always complain about it to people. And Larry said, ?Well the reason there isn?t is that everybody writes scripts different?everybody. I can show you the next ten scripts I get and I guarantee you that every one of them will be formatted differently.? I told him that? sbecuase there?s no standard?you don?t have to stick to the standard but there should be some basic structure that everything follows. He said there is?the pages and panels?and when I asked him, ?So why isn?t there a software, he said ?I don?t know.? So I shelved it aside again but I kept?every time I would have an idea for what I thought the structure would be, I have a drawer full of napkins, pieces of paper, even the back of a McDonald?s bag, of just notes of what I thought should be in the software. Every time I would run into like a blocked point of frustration?

?like Steve Bryan I?m doing a comic series with and he would send me via Dropbox the art to look at and I pulled up the art on my computer and I couldn?t pull up the art to look at it and pull up my script and keep it in the same plane. Every time I clicked on one it would go behind and it would drive me crazy. So I printed out a paper script and I?m looking at the artwork and doing all the notes there and then I had to do the notes again online and to me the simplest thing was to have a viewer where the artwork would come up, the page would come up that would be your script and then you could edit the script within it and make notations on the artwork, same exact file, and then you could save it as a PDF and send it back. How hard could that be?

Well, it turned out that was pretty hard. But I knew that if we could do that then everything else would be easy because everything else is basically just an accelerated word processor that knows what our needs are. So I coded like a really rough beta and when I called Steve just to get some ideas on the pitfalls?I?ve known Steve ever since I was a [stand-up] comic?even further than that, we both worked in a magic shop in Washington DC called Al?s Magic, which is where I think both of us got our skills in being able to just discuss things and our sense of humor because Al was a huge presence behind the counter and his selling point was so huge. And when I became a stand-up comic years later I found out that he became a digital comic. When I started Digital Seas I found out he started Scriptware. We kept going in these parallel paths. I called him up because I knew that with everything he went through with Scriptware, he would be able to tell me all of the problems I would need to look out for.

T-ShirtBecause the Digital Seas software I did was far more complicated. You?re talking about using satellite protocols to be able to talk to the ship. The graphic user interface was easy because when I was at AOL we did stuff that was similar to that but whenever anything seems really easy is when I always get nervous because I know that?s when it?s the most complicated. That?s all that life has ever taught me is that when you say, ?Oh, this is going to be a breeze,? next thing you know it?s four in the morning and you?re pulling your hair out.

So I knew that Steven would be able to tell me the pitfalls because he had gone through it with Scriptware. And he goes, after an hour into the conversation we?re getting all excited about it and I said, ?Steven, do you want to do this with me?? He said, ?I thought this is where we were going with that. Yeah, I?d love to do it.? So I sent him some of the code I?d been working on and he said what needed to be changed and this is why I was having a problem there, and because we were both, even though we were both in very creative, fun, outgoing things, we?re still like geeky damn nerds. You look at my office, I?ve got figures all over the top shelf of a bookshelf. I?m looking at everything from 007, RoboCop to Frank Black from Millennium. I mean, one shelf is all screenplays the next shelf is all magic books, the next shelves are all graphic novels. So it was just a perfect fit. So once I realized we could do the collaborating editor, and we started investing our own money, I said the hardest thing about this is just going to be getting it out to the masses to let them know that this exists.

And he wasn?t actually the first one, someone else had suggested Kickstarter to me but I wasn?t a fan of Kickstarter because I didn?t understand it. I thought that Kickstarter was begging. That?s how it felt to me, was that people were begging for money and I didn?t want to be a part of that. So it was actually again a conversation with Larry Young where he said, ?No, no, it?s really more about pre-sales. I mean, look what Jimmy Palmiotti and a bunch of guys are doing on here.?

So we went down that path and we realized it?s really an all-or-nothing thing and I said, ?Well, it?s a great way to find out if there?s interest out there, that?s for certain. Because at the end of the day, I kinda figured if it didn?t fly I would just fund it myself which I didn?t want to do?who want to dip into their own pocket to take a risk? Any entrepreneur will tell you never spend your own money. As bad as that sound but at least then in the old days I would take angel investments but I knew that they had an immediate return. which is why Kickstarter bothered me again?these people are sending money with no return. So I felt better knowing that most of the poeple who were buying the software were people who were actually going to use it, and all the other stuff was being bought up by family and friends. It made it feel a lot easier.

But that was kind of the birth of it?every time I tried to do something that was simplistic in writing a comic book script, and I got tired of people telling me just to use Word. To me as a writer, anything that takes me out of the moment is a hindrance. That?s why Final Draft or Movie Magic?that?s why it?s such a great software because you don?t think about that. you?re constantly just writing dialogue or exposition. Trying to format it in Word, that was the worst. I?d rather use a template in a much more expensive screenplay software than use Word. And the Marvel Way just isn?t my way. I tried and to me it just needed more structure. I couldn?t go, ?Okay, here?s everything I wrote, now draw something about it.? I know that?s a conversation that over the years I?ve realized people who draw the Marvel way?there?s no talking to them, there?s no other way. That was the golden era, that?s how things are supposed to be done. And I had another guy tell me that this software is going to be a nail to a coffin in this industry. I was like, are you kidding me?

ComicBook.com: I do think that artists are undervalued in today?s marketplace because of the rise of auteur kind of comic writers, but I?ll also say that the reason that has happened is that there are a lot more writers than artists whose names will sell a book.

Digital Seas International_Internet-cafeFarrington: Right. That?s true, that?s true. if I see Mark Waid?s name on something, I pull it right off.

It just got to the point where I knew if I didn?t do it, somebody was going to do it because that?s what pushed me to really get started because I remember what happened with Digital Seas.

When I pushed myself into making it happen, we took a few months putting the original design for a dog and pony show to take to the cruise lines. I realized that the one component I would need is the satellite connection so I came up with the idea of partnering with a satellite company and then taking it to the cruise lines, which is what I did. But when I went to approach the one satellite company that had the majority of the cruise lines?I knew this was the company I had to do it with?they were just about to go with someone else who came up with a very similar idea to mine but it was like these floor-top models. You remember those Pac-Man games at the bar, you?d set one down on the table top? It was just that?they were going to put them all around the ship. And I was like, ?No, I?m going to put in an Internet cafe where you can do upsale on drinks and food and they were like, ?If you hadn?t come to us literally yesterday with the phone call, meeting today, tomorrow I was signing a contract with this other company.? So every time I think about that, I go, ?You know what? Speed to market, let me get it done. I can do it, I know I can do it. Once I had Steven on?originally I was going to use him as a consultant?the speed to market literally went from a year and a half to six months because we know what we can do. Then getting a programming team on top of it? Anyway, it just made sense and I said, ?Let?s just do it.? My wife was so glad to hear that because she was like, ?I?m so tired of you saying somebody should do this!?

ComicBook.com: I don?t think I?ve ever had this conversation, in terms of why it doesn?t exist, but I do know that every time I start a script, I do that Google search to be like, ?Has anybody created this in the year and a half between when I wrote my last comic and now?? Because it just seems like someone ought to have already.

Farrington: I think part of the reasons had to be just understanding the market. If you look at the amount of people in the world who are creators and then you look at the amount of people that are really the professionals making it happen?not that everyone isn?t a creator, but I?m talking about people who are doing it on their own without the Big Two or independents or so forth?if you look at that pie, a very thin sliver of that pie are the ones who are actually doing it on a professional level, quote-unquote.? And people don?t understand fanboys. People don?t understand that market?is there money for that? They don?t see why they should invest in doing this wondering if it will even happen. I?m kind of the perfect storm?I?m the fanboy who has a software background, a business background and I know how to bring things to market.

But I?m not going to be stupid enough to think there?s not somebody else out there like me. I?m not unique. But at the same time it?s hard to think you?re going to jump into a world where it?s unsure whether you?ll get a return on your investment. That of course ultimately made the Kickstarter model even more appealing to me?I certainly would get a sense for what?s going on. But look at Final Draft?they know who their market are. Most people who buy Final Draft are never going to have a screenplay produced. Out here, everybody on the corner is writing a screenplay.

And I didn?t want to do something that was going to be expensive. I mean, my friends that were writing comic books, even a lot of the pro guys, they?re using Final Draft and templates. When I heard Scrivener came out, I was thrilled. I mean?free? Are you kidding me? But then it just ran into the same stuff. So I?m going to do a software that has nothing to do with what I do but it?s going to throw me a bone and let me do it too. And I loved the outlining feature on Scrivener but it still didn?t do what I wanted it to do. And then it was open source so there were people writing their own templates?it was just the fact that you had to shoehorn something in, specially when I have a background in coding. It?s like when you watch film as a filmmaker?you see all the nuances of what it took to make that one scene, from the lighting to the way it was edited to obviously how it was directed, maybe an acting choice. It?s the same thing when I look at code. It?s like, ?Why didn?t they do this or this or this or this? I know you can do it.?

EditorComicBook.com: Well, and every specialized community has that thing. One of the first things I look at when I get a new comic is the lettering.

Farrington: The one thing I?ve learned in just the last seven years with comic book people?and when I was a kid, I was comic book people. I would have those arguments about who could beat up who. But these guys now, they?re adults and they?re having that same argument but they can leave the comic shop and become a whole different person that you could reach and talk to and actually have a debate.? But they go into that shop and it?s like they?re Captain America and the shield goes up; you just can?t reach them.

So I had to be really careful about thinking that this was going to work. But you?re right?everybody just kept going, ?Why isn?t there something like this?? I get at least three or four comments through the Kickstarter comments saying ?I can?t believe no one?s done this. I?ve been waiting for this for years.?

Health Guru Carly Feagler's Top Ten Foods - The Skinny Confidential

Lauryn Evarts talks with Carly Feagler about diet and healthy foods.

Remember Carly?

Welp, the babe is like a total health guru.

She?s constantly teaching me about clean eats. For instance, the other day she bought me this organic sauerkraut by Happy Pantry. It was seriously insane- full of green cabbage, kale, dandelion greens, spirulina, & chlorella? She recommended eating the snack whenever I have a salt craving? & now I?m addicted!

Yummers.

Anyway this sex kitten is getting married ( read about her healthy?bachelorette party here ) this weekend so I wanted to feature her tight bod on the blog again. Check out her ten foods she can?t live without:

Lauryn Evarts talks with Carly Feagler about diet and healthy foods.

>> 1.} Kale &?other greens like spinach, arugula, chard, & dandelion greens:

I love all greens but don?t want to bore you, so let?s just talk about kale. Kale is low in calories & high in fiber, helps with detoxification, and keeps the liver healthy. Kale?s also full of iron, lowers cholesterol, & is high in Vitamins A, C, and K. My favorite thing about kale is that it has more calcium per calorie than milk & more protein per ounce than beef! I blend kale with other veggies and fruits daily and it is perfect in a salad or saut?ed with a little olive oil, garlic, and sea salt. For a kale smoothie recipe, click here.

>> 2.} Quinoa:

Quinoa contains almost twice as much fiber as most other grains. Quinoa?s protein-rich & is considered a complete protein because it contains all the essential amino acids. I rarely have a salad these days without adding a little quinoa on top. Try kale, tomatoes, avocado, red onion, quinoa, & maybe a few dried cranberries- easy & delicious! Quinoa tastes good with pretty much everything and get this- you can make it in a rice cooker. Just add water & voila! So cinchy.

>> 3.} Nuts:

Particularly almonds, pistachios, walnuts, & pine nuts. Nuts are high in protein & minerals. In addition, they?re good sources for essential fatty acids that protect your brain, heart, & bones. I love making my own trail mix with shelled pistachios, almonds, dried tart cherries, & dark chocolate chips- all organic, of course. Since nuts are high in calories & fat, make sure to only eat about a handful at a time.

Lauryn Evarts talks with Carly Feagler about diet and healthy foods.

>> 4.} Berries:

Especially blueberries, blackberries, & raspberries! ?Wild berries, ( blueberries in particular ), have high levels of antioxidants. One study found that wild blueberries counteract inflammation & insulin sensitivity, two factors that can contribute to arthritis & diabetes. Always buy organic and from local farmers when possible. I eat a little bowl of fresh berries almost daily?so refreshing & yummy!?For a fun berry recipe, click here.

>> 5.} Dark Chocolate:

Who doesn?t need a little chocolate now & then?! Like most of the other foods I have mentioned, dark chocolate is rich in antioxidants, which help rid the body of free radicals ( free radicals cause aging & cancer ). Dark chocolate?s good for the heart ( can improve blood flow & lower blood pressure ) & good for the brain ( causes the brain to release endorphins, which will make you feel happier )! I love the Endangered Species Chocolate Bars ( which are delicious and give back to help animals ) & also the dark chocolate sea salt almonds from Trader Joe?s. Yum!

>> 6.} Apples:

I love a good apple. Fiji, Honey Crisp, Pink Lady, & Granny Smith are my faves. Apples contain fiber ( four grams per medium apple ). They also are a good source of immune-boosting Vitamin C. Apples satisfy hunger for few calories so they can promote weight loss. Eating apples also help with oral hygiene & heart health. They satisfy my cravings for crunch and sweet at the same time. I eat one daily and crave them. Apples slices are also fun with cheese or almond butter ( click here for a delicious apple snack ). Try this-chop up some apples, celery, & walnuts. Mix together with nonfat vanilla greek yogurt & raisins. Sprinkle cinnamon ( which speeds up the metabolism ) on top. Delish.

Lauryn Evarts talks with Carly Feagler about diet and healthy foods.

?>> 7.} Avocados:

I could write a whole article about all the different ways I eat avocados ( << click here for my favorite avo snack ). I personally love to eat them plain or chopped up with some tomatoes, cilantro, & red onion. Either way, avocados are delicious plus nutritious. One avocado provides the body with Vitamins A, C, E, K, & B6, along with tons of potassium & ?healthy fats?, which are good for the heart. One of the biggest health benefits is that by adding avocado to certain foods, you can improve absorption of other nutrients. Avocado contains all the essential amino acids, which makes it a complete protein. Unlike meat proteins, avocado is easy for the body to digest. And seriously, who doesn?t love guacamole?!

>> 8.} Coconuts:?

Coconuts are a good source of fats, carbohydrates, & omega-3?s. Coconut oil is one of very few sources of lauric acid, which helps your immune system fight bacterial & viral infections. I use coconut oil often for cooking and baking, and keep another jar in the bathroom for a natural skin & hair moisturizer. I love buying young coconuts from Whole Foods, drinking the juice, & eating the meat inside after a workout. I always save a little of the meat to put on top of my dog Mayzie?s food- she?s obsessed with it!

>> 9.} Beets:

Beets are known as nature?s Viagra! Seriously, they contain high amounts of boron, which is a substance that is related to the production of human sex hormones. If that?s not enough of a reason to eat beets, they?re high in iron, fiber, folic acid, & vitamin B. Beets lower the blood pressure & contain tryptophan, which relaxes the mind. I?ve been obsessed with beets for the past couple years, especially since I discovered you can make them in a crockpot! Easy peasy! Just clean the beets, put one to two cups of water in the crockpot, put as many beets as you can in the crockpot, turn on high for four hours & the skin will come right off. Chop & add to arugula, goat cheese, & a few walnuts or pine nuts. My faves are the golden beets.

>> 8.} Coconuts: Coconuts are a good source of fats, carbohydrates, & omega-3?s. I always save a little of the meat to put on top of my dog Mayzie?s food- she's obsessed with it! >> 9.} Beets: Beets are known as nature?s Viagra! Seriously, they contain high amounts of boron, which is a substance that is related to the production of human sex hormones. If that?s not enough of a reason to eat beets, they're high in iron, fiber, folic acid, & vitamin B. Beets lower the blood pressure & contain tryptophan, which relaxes the mind. Chop & add to arugula, goat cheese, & a few walnuts or pine nuts. My faves are the golden beets.

>> 10.} Lemons:

Lemons are antibacterial, antiviral, & immune boosting. They aid in digestion, clean the liver, & fight infection. I start my day with a cup of warm water with juice from a half of a small lemon ( click here for more deets ). Then I drink two cups of hot green tea ( I love Yogi Tea?s ?Green Tea Blueberry Slim-Life? ) with the other half of the lemon & some honey ( honey is another incredible antiseptic & antioxidant! ).

Mavs out on Dwight Howard, move on to Plan B again

(AP) ? It's Plan B again for the Dallas Mavericks in free agency.

Mavericks owner Mark Cuban tweeted Friday that it was "time to get back to work" amid multiple media reports that Dallas was out of the running for free agent center Dwight Howard.

"The Mavs are back open for business," Cuban wrote on Twitter.

It's the second straight summer Dallas has missed on a big name in free agency after declining to bring back key pieces of the 2011 championship team in the name of salary cap space. Deron Williams chose to stay with the Brooklyn Nets last year.

Howard met earlier this week with his current team, the Los Angeles Lakers, along with Houston, Golden State, Atlanta and Dallas.

LGUs preferred to develop renewable energy projects over private corporations

MALAYBALAY CITY (MindaNews / 6 July) ? Local government units are the better developers of renewable energy projects like hydroelectric power because of faster time to develop at lower cost, among other reasons.

David A. Tauli, of the Mindanao Coalition of Power Consumers, told MindaNews that LGUs can obtain permits from government agencies faster, and can offer lower rates because of the lower rate of return requirement.

?The best part of the renewable energy solution to the Mindanao power problem is that most of the power plants will be owned by the people through their local governments and not by private corporations or the national government,? he added.

Romeo Montenegro, investment promotions and public affairs director of the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA), said if the LGU is capable, competent, and has put in place a proper mechanism to operate a plant like a private entity, then the scheme is preferred.

?With LGUs, more profit means more budget is ploughed back to the project for the benefit of the owners ? more services for the people,? he added.

But he stressed that if the LGU lacks the qualifications, then it should not go into power generation.

Tauli pointed out that it is easier for LGUs to obtain low-cost loans.

?Earnings from hydro (electric) projects go to the LGU for use in the development of the river and its watershed area, as well as for other government services,? he added in a PowerPoint presentation.

He said a greater part of about 540 megawatts total new capacity from 2016 to 2018 will be owned by the local government in partnership with private corporations, the latter will take charge of construction, operation, and maintenance.

Tauli, also an engineering consultant of Bukidnon Rep. Florencio T. Flores (2nd Dist.), was previously connected with the Cagayan Electric Power and Light Company (Cepalco).

He said the provincial, city, or municipal government can be the developer and owner of the project with the advantage that the project itself is the collateral for bank loans.

He added that LGUs need not infuse capital into the project ?but can borrow all funds required for project implementation.?

But he clarified that construction should not be done by administration or by the LGU itself.

He said it should be done by private hydro corporations through public bidding and operations should be managed by private corporations, too, through public bidding.

Montenegro, however, clarified LGUs to work with the local electric cooperatives for embedded capacity before offering their new power source to the grid.

He added that what bogs many power buyers from contracting with LGUs is the possibility of problems in sustainability, political dynamics, and lack of good governance in some.

Sarah Murnaghan Waves, Blows a Kiss in New Video

She's not back to singing "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" just yet, but there's a new video of Sarah Murnaghan awake and waving after the two adult-lung transplants that saved her life.

Surrounded by a fuzzy pink blanket and a stuffed animal, the 10-year-old whose parents successfully fought a rule preventing her from qualifying for adult lungs waved at the camera, mouthed, "I Love you, too" and blew a kiss.

The Murnaghans revealed last week that Sarah had two adult-lung transplants because the first one failed almost immediately after surgery June 12. She was then relisted for another adult-lung transplant and received it June 15, even though the donor lungs were infected with pneumonia.

A healthier patient might have turned down the lungs and waited for a better pair, but Sarah was out of options, so they went ahead with the operation.

"They were Sarah's best and only hope," the Murnaghans wrote in their June 28 statement. "The second transplant operation was truly a success."

Sarah underwent diaphragm surgery Tuesday because her diaphragm was partially paralyzed during the two transplants, making it difficult for her to breathe on her own. The diaphragm surgery was another step.

Sarah was dying of cystic fibrosis this time last month. The genetic condition affects cells that produce mucus, sweat and digestive fluid. Patients typically suffer so much lung damage that they often go into respiratory failure, which is why Sarah needed a lung transplant to survive.

About a month ago, Janet Murnaghan started a viral Change.org petition, calling attention to what would become known as the Under 12 Rule, which said that even though Sarah would be given priority when pediatric lungs became available, adult lungs would have to be offered to adult matches in her region before they could be offered to her.

On June 5, a federal judge issued a temporary restraining order to prevent U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius from enforcing the rule for Sarah. By June 10, the Organ Transplantation and Procurement Network re-evaluated the Under 12 Rule and decided to keep it but created a mechanism for exceptions, depending on the case.

AP PHOTOS: 6 cities breweries helped transform

In once rundown urban districts across the country, craft breweries have helped to transform the neighborhoods around them.

Small business owners tackled the hard work of transforming industrial buildings, many of which had sat empty as demographic changes pulled manufacturers and residents to the suburbs.

Small-time, independent brewers have been one of the beer market's growth drivers. The number of breweries in the U.S. catapulted from 92 in 1980 to 2,514 as of May 2013, according to craft beer trade group Brewers Association. Barrels shipped have more than doubled in the past decade, and craft beer now makes up nearly 7 percent of a U.S. beer market that is growing slowly overall, according to trade publication Beer Marketer's Insights.

As the breweries churned out beer, they drew visitors and eventually new, young residents ? and more small businesses.

Here's a look at six breweries whose presence helped to change their surroundings:

DOWNTOWN DIGS: Boulevard Brewing opened in 1989 in its Kansas City, Mo. Westside neighborhood, creating a brewery out of a building that had been a railroad's laundry. While it probably would have been cheaper for the company to be in the suburbs, the brewery's managers are "committed urbanists" who like the idea of contributing to the vitality of the central city as opposed to building on undeveloped land in the suburbs, says Boulevard's CFO, Jeff Crum.

The building's renovation ranged from replacing pipes to cutting out a skylight to make room for tanks. And in order to grow, Boulevard had to buy the land around it from different owners, get approvals from neighbors and get the city to rezone the land around it.

The brewery, at first, struggled to attract visitors, but now draws about 50,000 people annually as the area around it picked up alongside a broader renewal in nearby downtown Kansas City.

"Not very many years ago this would be an area you'd stay the hell away from," says Danny O'Neill, who started a coffee roaster, the Roasterie, down the street from Boulevard in 1993. Boulevard helped him find his building, and nowadays the coffee factory and brewery host tours and weddings. "Somebody has to go in there first, and I think that's the role that Boulevard played," O'Neill says.

ON THE WATERFRONT: Harpoon Brewery opened on the South Boston waterfront in 1986, when it was surrounded by auto body shops and little else. Now the brewery draws more than 85,000 people a year from tours and tastings, and thousands more from festivals. These days, the city is focused on redeveloping the area. New apartment and office buildings, restaurants and a convention center sit nearby.

Harpoon recently negotiated a 50-year lease with the city. The rent will rise over time, but generally, long leases provide protection from spikes that can happen when an area becomes so popular that property values skyrocket.

RUST BELT REVAMP: Great Lakes opened in Cleveland's Ohio City neighborhood in 1988. The downtown neighborhood was "perceived as dangerous and blighted" into the 1980s, says Eric Wobser. He works for Ohio City Inc., a nonprofit that promotes residential and commercial development while trying to preserve the neighborhood's older buildings.

Great Lakes built a brewery and a brewpub. Other breweries and businesses ? a pasta maker, a bike shop, a tortilla factory, as well as restaurants and bars ? followed. Newcomers flock to the neighborhood, even though Cleveland's overall population is still declining. The city repaved the quiet street next to the brewery, Market Ave., with cobblestones, and poured millions into renovating a nearby 19th-century market.

BREWERY BUBBLE: In the waterfront Ballard section of Seattle, home to fishing shops, shipyards and boat fueling facilities for decades, six breweries have sprung up in the past two years. They joined Hale's Ales and Maritime Pacific Brewing, which both opened in Ballard in the 1990s.

Hale's Ales in 1995 took over a facility that had housed an industrial hose manufacturer and before that a maker of engines.

The neighborhood has become "softer," says Hale's Ales manager Phil O'Brien. "What used to be fishing shops are little restaurants ? what used to be hardware stores are now coffee shops."

While Ballard is still a hub of maritime industry, it has landed higher-income apartment buildings and has attracted restaurants and nightlife.

BROOKLYN BRANDS: When Brooklyn Brewery opened in the Williamsburg section of the New York City borough in 1996, its neighbors were mostly deserted warehouses and factories. Today, Brooklyn Brewery is surrounded by modern apartment buildings, trendy bars, shops and restaurants. There's still some graffiti, but that hasn't deterred the influx of new residents willing to spend a lot of money to live there. In the past decade, home values in the Brewery's neighborhood have more than doubled ? up 145 percent, according to real estate appraiser Miller Samuel. Brooklyn Brewery and another local craft brewer, Kelso, worry that rising property values will eventually force them out of their current neighborhoods.

ACROSS THE BAY: The tech boom has made one brewpub's growth plans more complicated. In San Francisco, 21st Amendment brewery is two blocks from AT&T Park where baseball's Giants play. Along with the bustling technology sector, 21st Amendment helped to transform the city's SoMa neighborhood.

"People refer to use as the granddaddy of the neighborhood," says 21st Amendment founder Nico Freccia.

Now the company wants to build an 80,000-square-foot brewery ? but property values are too high. The company has opened offices in the East Bay, and is scouting space there for the brewery, hoping to help revitalize an Oakland neighborhood.
