Baby Boomer Women: Lessons From the Golden Girls

Do you know why so many of us Baby Boomer women love The Golden Girls? Well, I don?t know about anyone else, but I always loved Dorothy best.

Dorothy is a levelheaded career woman who generally knows what she wants and goes about getting it. But she can also loosen up and have a good time, though sometimes she wonders how she let her roommates get her into a few of those situations! And Dorothy never takes anything from anyone, even if Estelle usually gets in the last word.

But what can we as Boomer women learn from the ?Girls?? I think that there are a lot of lessons for us in that show, in between the laughs.

For one thing, think about Blanche. Well before Kim Cattrall was scorching TV screens, Blanche Deveraux was showing us that older women could light sparks, too. Blanche is outrageous, fun-and she doesn?t hesitate to be a very, very sexual woman.

Or think about Estelle. Yes, in some ways she?s a stereotypical cranky old lady. But what an old lady! Her wit is sharper than some of my steak knives, and there?s never any doubt that Estelle is an independent woman and able to take very good care of herself.

As for Rose? well, Rose. She?s sometimes surprisingly sharp for a total airhead, isn?t she?

But here?s the best lesson I think that Baby Boomer women can take from The Golden Girls-independence.

Two of our favorite four roommates had their own careers. The four of them banded together to take care of each other and to manage their finances well. And every single one of them, in one way or another, is the kind of independent, capable woman we Boomer women have always seen in ourselves.

The Golden Girls has a lot to teach women about friendship, too. If we tend to our relationships well, our friends can be there for us when other things and people aren?t. One woman alone can accomplish a lot, there?s no doubt about it. But put women together, and the only limit is our imagination.

Finally, I think The Golden Girls shows us a lot of the ways that Boomer women can be anyone we want to be. There?s no reason for us to give up being sexy, or ambitious, or sharp-witted, or smart. We certainly don?t have to give up our independence or stop dressing ourselves beautifully.

So who do you want to be, now that you?re a woman starting your second life? Do you want to take your current career further or start something completely new? Is it time to think of downsizing your house, or maybe inviting in some close friends as roommates so you can all use more of your money for things other than housing?

Or is it time to pick up the phone and finally call that man you met at one of your club meetings and have been thinking about ever since?

Baby Boomer women have already transformed what it meant to be young women. We?ve shown our world that women can excel at any career we choose. And with women like Kim Cattrall, Sharon Stone, and Christie Brinkley, we?re certainly proving that older women are just as hot as our younger sisters. So next time you get stuck in some silly stereotype about what?s possible for you, just sit down and find a re-run of The Golden Girls. You?ll laugh a lot, and you?ll remember that the world is an open door!
