How To Run File and Folder Watcher as a Windows Service with FireDaemon

File and Folder Watcher continuously monitors one or more folders for new files. When new files arrive, File and Folder Watcher then triggers a custom action, such as running a second program with the new files. The application can be run as a Windows Service using FireDaemon. FireDaemon will allow you to have the application start automatically at boot prior to login, allow you to start multiple instances of the application and so forth. This HOWTO will show you how set it up. You can also use FireDaemon Fusion to manage FireDaemon and other Windows services via a web browser.

File and Folder Watcher Setup Under FireDaemon

  1. If you are evaluting, download the evaluation edition from here (Skip Step 2 but continue with step 3)
  2. If you purchased a license for File and Folder Watcher, download the latest installer from the members area here.
  3. Run the installer. By default files are installed to "C:\Program Files (x86)\DataMystic\FileWatcher" (in 64 bit windows. In 32bit windows, the files are installed to "C:\Program Files\DataMystic\FileWatcher")
  4. Install FireDaemon Pro into the directory of your choice (typically C:\Program Files\FireDaemon). FireDaemon can be downloaded from here.
  5. Next start the FireDaemon GUI from the desktop shortcut. Click on the "Create a new service definition" button in the toolbar (or type Ctrl+N) and enter the information into the fields as you see below. Obviously adjust paths to suite your installation.

The most important field on the tab is the Parameters. The Parameters load a specific configuration and start checking the moment the service is started.

Here?s the full parameter list you should have:
    "/f="c:\my_settings.fwx" /g

    • "/f="c:\my_settings.fwx? Load a settings file. This is useful if you are running multiple copies of File and Folder Watcher. You should still have it defined even if you aren't running multiple copies so the correct config is loaded. Replace "c:\my_settings.fwx" with the path to your fwx settings file.
    • ?-g? Begin watching immediately when the File and Folder Watcher service is started. If this parameter is missing, File and Folder Watcher will not start checking when the service is started.
  6. Now click on the Settings tab. If you DON'T want to see File and Folder Watcher running, uncheck the Interact with Desktop check box & select ?Hidden? from the ?Show Window? dropdown. You can optionally run FileWatcher as the user you installed it as. In the Logon Account field type your username (eg. Administrator) and then enter the user's password twice in the Password and Confirm fields.

  7. Now click on the Advanced tab. You can change the Process Priority to allocate more CPU time to FileWatcher or specify which CPU or core FileWatcher will run on (in the case of multi-processor, hyperthreaded or multi-core CPUs).

  8. Now click on the Dependencies tab and add any dependencies you wish (such as FTP server).

  9. Now click on the Ok button to install and start File and Folder Watcher!
