Details continue to surface about Staff Sgt. Robert Bales, the U.S. soldier suspected of massacring 16 Afghan civilians, who was identified by U.S. officials Friday. But, he was also once arrested on a misdemeanor charge of assault on a woman, and was having financial problems. Dr. Stephen Xenakis, a psychiatrist and former adviser to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, says Bales' apparent breakdown is emblematic of larger problems within the overstretched military. "The Army will want to say that soldiers who commit crimes are rogues, that they are individual, isolated cases," he says. "But they are not." [New York Times]
