What do you think of this idea for a non profit business that will ...

I have an idea that I would like to turn into a non profit business. I plan to open a children?s consignment store but not the traditional kind! In my store, parents would donate their children?s outgrown clothing, baby gear, and sports equipment. Donors AND buyers would register the name and location of their child?s classroom teacher. When an item sells, the proceeds would be split 3 ways, 33% to the store for my salary an operating expenses, 33% to the donor?s child?s classroom, and 33% to the buyer?s child?s classroom. Funds would be uploaded to a ?reward card? in the name of each teacher who could check their balances on line and shop at participating school supply merchants, These merchants would also kick back a percentage of the sales to me, adding to the store?s revenue.

What do you think?

I plan to approach the local school boards about advertising in the kid?s backpacks, and maybe even talk them into allowing a collection bin in the parking lot of each elementary school.

Do you think this could work? Would you shop there? Donate there? Do you think it has enough community serving merits to warrant non profit status?

Is anyone out there an expert on non profits? Can I apply for grants? Get reduced rent in a city building?

Do you think teachers will like it? I?ve read that many teachers spend their OWN money buying school supplies. Teachers are underpaid enough as it is!

I really think my idea is a win-win. Parents in a tough economy can donate directly to their child?s classroom without writing a check while cleaning their closets at the same time. Kids and teachers will get much needed school supplies?even computers?despite devestating budget cuts. Oh, and I can make a reasonable living doing something I enjoy while helping my community!
