Police: Chicago had no shootings in 24-hour period (AP)

CHICAGO ? Chicago saw something this week it hasn't seen in nearly a year: An entire 24-hour period where there was not a single shooting or murder.

Police say the period of quiet happened Wednesday.

In recent months, Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy have been touting a decision to put hundreds more police officers on beat patrol. And in press releases this week, both of them said it's paying off.

Emanuel had promised during his campaign for mayor that he would put more police officers on the street. He says that the strategy that includes redeploying officers who were on administrative duty is working.

Police say there were a number of shootings on Thursday but no homicides.
